🏆 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open. timberdesignawards.com.au/how-to-enter/ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT - Grace Park House 2.0 Residential Class 1 - Alteration or Addition | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards The second stage in the sensitive transformation of a Queen Anne style house in Hawthorn, Grace Park House 2.0 by @polystudioarchitecture takes a contemporary but interpretative approach to the original building fabric, replacing the rear with a new double storey extension while retaining as much of the existing structure as possible. Timber runs through every layer. Blackbutt engineered flooring by @bigrivergroup (ArmourFloor) matches the existing floors, carrying continuity from front to back. The same species extends into wall panelling and feature joinery, finished in rotary-cut blackbutt veneer (ArmourCab) chosen for its large-format grain patterns over the repetitive planking of other cuts. Panels and joinery are finely detailed to minimise joints, conceal corners and integrate services behind routed openings. Outside, blackbutt cladding sits sparingly in well-protected locations against recycled red brick, while a grid of deep white cypress glulam beams forms a pergola providing shade and enclosure for al fresco dining. The project pairs its timber palette with a serious sustainability commitment: triple-glazed aluclad timber windows, all-electric building services, an 11kW PV system and passive solar design. This week on Radio Architecture we welcome DANIEL WOLKENBERG to the @radiocarrum studio! Daniel founded Poly Studio in 2012 after gaining experience working in a variety of architectural practices including Studio Libeskind in Berlin and as an Associate at Lab Architecture. Having working on a wide range of projects from small exhibitions to large urban master plans his aspiration for Poly Studio was to work on smaller, local projects which embed best-practice in sustainability into contemporary design for both new builds and adaptive re-use of existing buildings. To this end, he has developed expertise in Passivhaus and high-performing construction practices that result in energy efficient, comfortable and healthy buildings. Daniel is driven by the capacity of architecture to structure the relationships between ‘things’ – buildings, materials, spaces, functions, interior and exterior. Key architectural interests include housing, educational and cultural facilities, public space and strategic master planning. He has taught design studios at RMIT and Melbourne University. We recently completed a renovation of a substantial double storey home in Caulfield from the 1970's designed by the European emigre architect, Erwin Kaldor. Multiple interventions and extensions over the years had strayed from the late-modernist palette. Last year we had the pleasure once again of collaborating with @polystudioarchitecture to complete an extension to a heritage home in the heart of the CBD! This project involved, retention of the front facade with the addition of the @colorbondsteel cladding on newly constructed first floor addition. At the rear, Glulam GL10 timber fins were supplied by @berniecooktimber and installed by us to create privacy and an architectural feature.
