We are thrilled to announce a new exhibition at Polu Gallery!
Ok Liao’s new exhibition will be held for two weeks starting Saturday, October 4th!
This is his second solo exhibition in Hawaii, following last year’s event.
The title of this exhibition is
“Scars to Stars.”
A recurring motif in his art is the image of a local Hawaiian surf girl bearing scars from surfing.
These scars transform into something akin to stars, embedding a poetic and positive message overflowing with the Aloha spirit throughout his artworks.
The opening of his annual solo exhibition will take place on Saturday, October 4th, from 5 PM to 8 PM. This is a free, open-to-the-public event. The artist himself will be in attendance. Many new original works, painted in acrylic on large canvases, will be unveiled. These pieces are strikingly contemporary and beautiful. Of course, prints of the new works will also be available!

Guys, talk about country mouse going to the city! I rarely leave the island of Kauai, so it was quite an experience. Returning to the neighborhood where I grew up, where I haven’t lived in 58 years, was a bit startling but a lot of fun.

The opening of my show was lovely, my Monday class went well and I had some free time to check out the Sheraton’s infinity pool with my son and daughter-in-law, who flew over.
.
It was wonderful to see some Kauai peeps there and to get to know Jun Yoshimura and the staff at Polu Gallery. The work will be featured there for two weeks and will remain at Polu. They also have a good selection of prints of my work, both in the gallery and on their website.

Surprising fact…
My show is happening in the neighborhood where I grew up…the neighborhood I left when I was 22-years-old. It’s strange to realize I could walk from Polu Gallery to my old school, Thomas Jefferson Elementary, as well as to the site of the gallery my parents owned in the 1950’s and 1960’s, back when Hawaii was a territory. I have happy memories of riding my bicycle down Kalakaua Boulevard and surfing with my brothers at Tong’s, our neighborhood spot, right at the foot of Le’ahi.
