As the ongoing conflict with Iran drives global oil volatility and pushes U.S. gas prices above $4 per gallon, oil companies are reporting record-breaking profits.
A windfall profits tax would ensure that corporations don’t profit from geopolitical instability at the expense of working families. A recent report from The Guardian showed the oil and gas industry earning more than $30 million an hour in excess profits, and a recent investigation from the Wall Street Journal has found that energy executives sold roughly $1.4 billion in stock during the same period.

Hawaii’s housing crisis is driven by many things, among them the worsening climate crisis. Big Oil has known for decades that burning fossil fuels has adverse impacts on our climate, including rising sea levels and intensifying storms. In fact, a majority of Hawaii’s residents are concerned about sea level rise and the worsening climate crisis.
SB1166 is making its way through the legislature, giving families and insurers the legal standing they need to hold big oil corporations accountable. Not only did Big Oil know about the worsening crisis they were contributing to, they LIED about it and chose to ignore it. While they made good money off the products they sold, it was everyone else paying the price with higher insurance premiums, reduced local resources, and rising costs for all necessities.
