Welcome to PodHopping 👋 We’re Michelle, Hein, our two fun-loving girls, and the one-and-only Louis le Roux, our rescue lab-husky mix 🐾.
Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, we spent some amazing years in London, and now call Kansas City home. By day, Michelle works in change management consulting, and Hein in sports venue design.
In 2024, we turned our shared passion for sustainability into something bigger with the launch of the Butterfly Pods, an #offgrid retreat on our 5-acre property just one hour south of KC. We wanted to create a space where people could slow down, reconnect with nature, and learn to live more sustainably.
Our big vision is to create a network of unique pods in amazing locations where “podhoppers” can explore, support local gems, and soak up all the natural beauty of our world.

Statistics say that the majority of guest stays have been booked by moms - sometimes with and many times without the kids. Some have even split their stays, a few nights just the moms with Dads and kids joining later.
We are so grateful for our own mothers and to all those who have chosen to bring their families and friends out for quality time at the Butterfly Pods 🦋❤️ Thank you to all the moms that dream of visiting the pods one day too. This was my second time at the Butterfly Pods, but this time I went back with a group of friends. I love being out in nature and relaxing, and this is the perfect spot to get away and be present.
My friends and I brought drinks and made dinner, chilled in the hot tub, talked well into the night, and ate breakfast on the patio in the morning. If you’re looking for a place to get away, connect, and relax this is it!
Things to know about 📍The Butterfly Pods:
✨There are two separate cabins. The main cabin has a kitchen area and can sleep 5 people, the second cabin can sleep 4. You get both cabins when you rent so you have the whole property to yourself!
✨ They provide kayaks, stand up paddle boards, a hot tub, a fire pit, and a pool
✨An hour south in Pleasanton, KS

A moment for the loft bunk bedroom, magical for children and adults 💫 Without doubt the most memorable and curious room at the Butterfly Pods. When designing the property, our girls’ major requirement was a bunk room. We heavily debated the layout of the room to arrive at a compromise between function and fun 🤩 This way kids can take turns to sleep on the loft bunk and kids or adults can sleep on the full size bed below. Securing the bunk at the level of the third window allows for uninterrupted nature views for all 🌳

Come along with our amazing maintenance man as he attends to the Butterfly Pods after the winter storm! Priority number 1 was clearing off the solar panels to get the energy generation going. Some pumps and pipes needed attention too but not as pretty for the gram! Thankful we have an incredible local team to help us when needed and who oblige my requests for content ❤️
