I’m delighted to present the latest instalment of my Occasional Music series!
A couple of years ago I became interested in the idea of using several cassette recorders playing a similar musical phrase as a basis for a live performance. Not a
particularly original idea, to be honest. But, nevertheless, one that provided me with an opportunity for exploration.
The first iteration, in early 2025, used repeating electric guitar phrases. I had another crack at it a couple of weeks back, using repeated synth phrases in a kind of pretend tape loop.
This second outing worked well, but I opted for a slightly different procedure for recording, abandoning the spatial aspect and focusing on a more straightforward presentation.
This, then, is TAPEDEATH 2026. Part 1 is the synth stuff, delivered via a failing Korg Volca and recorded to cassette. Various sonic artefacts are retained. Part 2 is the guitar loops - you’ll hear the click of my cheap looper pedal in one of the channels. I have clipped
out some of the worst glitches (the tapes themselves were in a bit of a sorry state) but, again, there’s plenty of murk and hiss to keep you happy.
In all, it’s fairly unvarnished stuff. Please listen and enjoy accordingly 🙀🤓

Paul had come over to drop off a small mixer I could use for a show I was going to play in Leeds. I still have the mixer and I still use it for shows.
Enjoy this dada soundscape of balloons, tannoys, oscillators, coffee foamers and very wrong sounding guitar.

I’m delighted to announce OCCASIONAL MUSIC – a series to showcase various odds and ends of my sonic explorations that have accumulated over the past few years and to document my ongoing practice.
So there might be things that I haven’t quite deemed fit for a ‘proper’ release, or recordings of live sets, or experiments in form that never quite blossomed into life.
OCCASIONAL MUSIC will also act as a prompt for creation, a reminder to shift the usual life and domestic jumble around a bit and focus on making some things. Some of that stuff may even be worth listening to.
It’s all going to be free, obviously.
GUITAR FRAGMENTS is the first instalment. Solo acoustic guitar, recorded into Tascam DR-40 handheld recorder, then manipulated in a single session using a borrowed Microgranny sampler.
Mono recordings, no mixing, some EQ, no mastering.

I’ve got a couple more nice shows coming up. On Saturday 14/6 I’m dead chuffed to be playing as IVY NOSTRUM with @matt____kins and @room2n0g … expect stasis whines and nonsense lingo.
And then on Sunday 15/6 I’ll be doing a solo set of megaphone static and tape noise alongside a crew of awesome improvisers.
Both events take place at the wondrous @hundred_years_gallery - come along and say hi!

And on SUNDAY AFTERNOON I’ll be doing some skittered free improvisation with the superb N.O MOORE alongside some other great crew.

WE DID IT! Phew, what an experience! The ride was as beautiful and as challenging as I’d hoped it would be. The privilege of being able to cycle around the stunning scenery of Loch Ness on closed roads - no cars! - was wonderful. And that climb? Yep, it was gruelling. But the sense of achievement when we reached the piper at the summit was mind blowing! THANK YOU to everyone who has donated and
followed our journey over the past months. You’ve been inspirational!
