It’s very humbling when you have a LIVING LEGEND perform his music in front of your curated exhibition “Virginia Is For Music Lovers” at the @bhmva
Today @azriah_bryant and I had the honor of interviewing a Richmond Legend Plunky Nkabinde @plunkyone at the @bhmva for CARTER Magazine, @dnaamerica and @12onyourside to announce “Plunky Day” celebrating the living legend with his day July 19, 2024 in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
I will be going into this weekend with this moment on repeat.
Follow DNA America for more details on when we will air the interview on 12 On Your Side.

Oneness of Juju - African Rhythms (1975)
Revisiting this wonderful and funky LP. Oneness of Juju was the brainchild of James “Plunky Nkabinde” Branch, a brilliant musician and activist. This record released on the legendary Black Fire label is basically a landmark of Afro-centric jazz in the 70s, and the first album by this famous underground collective.
This Washington DC-based group grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble - formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk - alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals 🔥 The album’s is without a doubt one of the great independent soul jazz albums of the 70s and it’s filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic ”African Rhythms” and ”Liberation Dues”. Other titles include ”Kazi”, ”Funky Wood”, ”Don’t Give Up”, ”Poo Too”, and ”Incognito”…
This LP is a bold, badass mix of Afrobeat, soul, jazz, and funk, held together by an undeniable sense of cool.
Just a brilliant and special record front to back.

What’s the future without the past!?
Had an amazing time @lyh_artsconsortium sharing the history of music. It was such an honor to lecture and perform for an awesome crowd!
