Came across this thread by @itsjujubae about how it’s not a “radical” thing to not like Zora Neale Hurston because not liking Zora Neale Hurston when she was alive was almost the rational thing to do when The New Negro was trying to be formed. Zora loved us as we were, tried to normalize us as we were and put us in context without rewriting us, and people hated her for it. She was buried by her community for looking us in the eyes and loving unflinchingly. And it took a Black woman scholar, Alice Walker, to resurrect her decades after she died in poverty, and now people say her name. And I think about Black femicide, our sisters and mothers and aunties and grandmothers who died for looking into our eyes unflinchingly, and loving anyway. And it takes Black women raising their names so they are not forgotten. I don’t know where this is going, but here’s an imperfect sonnet. 🤍

West Philly, we salute you. This edition of “Imagine Our Lives Without Fear” uplifts the folks behind the counter, behind the barber’s chair or out taking a stroll down the block. Photojournalist Haamza Edwards took us to Out West, ReAnimator, and Jerrod’s Barbershop on his February photo walk around West Philadelphia. The first photograph shows the site of the cherished Philadelphia Stars in February, post-demolition. (Mural Arts unveiled the design for the new Philly Stars mural last month, which should be completed this summer.) Poetry by Khalisah Hameed.

No matter the season, Philadelphia has its ups and downs. Today’s installment brings us a winter-to-spring collaboration between photojournalist Kriston Jae Bethel and poet Khalisah Hameed, “Serenity and Sinkholes.” Bethel visited Penn’s Landing, the 7th Ward, Upsala Mansion, and Johnson House, among other places. What are your thoughts on this series so far? Share your feedback in the comments below.

Every student deserves a classroom that affords emotional safety and fosters community. In this video, ArtWell Teaching Artist Khalisah Hameed (@plpit.purpose ) reflects on her experience with ArtWell and what it means to create a supportive artistic environment for young people: "For me, being a Teaching Artist with ArtWell means engaging in revolutionary kindness and revolutionary love with students who are within systems that don't always affirm them, that don't always affirm their whole person, and being able to be a safe space for students." Khalisah Hameed is a poet, teaching artist, event curator, audio engineer, and multimedia producer based in Philadelphia. She utilizes her Bachelor’s in Music Production and MFA in Writing as the founder and production manager of The Olive Press Media, a multimedia production company specializing in literary and audio production, as well as event curation. Khalisah is the author of two self-published collections of poetry, Concrete Growth and Indigo Sun, the editor of an anthology of written and visual art, When the Sun Rose at 9:08, and Khalisah also hosts a biweekly open mic every 2nd and 4th Friday in Germantown called Say It Wit Ya Chest. Will you join us today, on ArtWell Giving Day, and help create supportive artistic spaces across Philadelphia? Donate at the link in our bio!
