Very sad to learn of the passing of Alex Zanardi.
Alex’s passion for life, and his perseverance through unimaginable setbacks, were truly unrivalled. What he achieved on four wheels, and later in handcycling at the Paralympics, was nothing short of a Hollywood-style comeback story.
To me, Alex was more than a legend. He was a role model. He played a massive part in reigniting my early career and helped guide me on my path towards IndyCar.
2004, I won the FIA Asia-Pacific kart Championship in Suzuka in Zanardi kart’s third ever race. The ‘trophy’, a long cylindrical exhaust looking tube; lead to a memorable phone call from Zanardi Kart boss Dino Chiesa to Alex to inform him of the good news that his driver had just won and better news that he was bringing him home a spare leg!…. 🙈
The last time I had dinner with him before I left for America, he told me he was “jealous” of me. For a long time, I couldn’t understand how someone who had achieved so much could feel that way about a young aspiring driver who had yet to achieve anything.
Only later did I realise what he meant.
His “jealousy” wasn’t about results—it was about the journey. The passion, the unknown, the excitement of everything still to come. He had lived it all, and in that moment, he simply wished he could experience it again.

Silverstone 500
P9 overall and P5 in class.
Not where we want to be, but a decent recovery from the back row after taking the 10-place grid drop to change the turbos after qualifying.
We struggled for outright pace all race, but the team did a great job and kept pushing to get the most out of what we had. In the end, we maximised the package and came away with some solid points to get us up and running.
There’s plenty of data to look at and analyse between now and the next race, but we’ll regroup, do the work, and regain our pre-season form.
Finally… it’s Race Day!
The British GT Silverstone 500 kick-starts our season this afternoon. You won’t want to miss it.
