We all needed a little recharge after that last Spring Snow Storm at the height of calving. All charged up and excited to have our entire herd in @halterhq virtual ecollars this spring! #livestockguardiandog #TurkishKangal #lowstresshandling #agtech #worksmarternotharder😎

Virtual Fencing Fun Fact: Our collars give us the ability to easily and precisely move our cows in their pastures from anywhere - anytime- from our phones…every day. This has allowed us to maximize the utilization of our swath grazing and has cut the cost of our conventional feeding by more than half. Making the most of every acre- @halterhq where have you been all our life?! #plateaucattleco #gamechanger #agtech #lowstresshandling

It’s been a minute since we shared how our @halterhq collars -virtual fencing technology has been working for us. In short - it has been amazing: What stands out the most is the precision in which we can manage our swath grazing. For example, we can move the virtual fence barrier and move cattle an exact 1.8 acres -that is equivalent to 1 days worth of feed. The collars support the full grazing of the area - ensuring the cattle utilize all the feed before we move the “break” - the virtual fence. What has been incredible too, is how fast these cows have learned the system. In the first few days - when we moved the virtual fence - the cows took about 30 minutes to move when they received the prompt vibration- now they move within minutes. What’s amusing to observe is that the cows follow that first lead cow who goes past the previous virtual fence barrier- as if there is an imaginary gate- which makes sense as every time they have been moved previously in their life was through a small opening/gate. We wonder if overtime that will change? Can you teach an old cow new tricks? We will have to wait and see. You can certainly teach old cowboys and cowgirls new tricks with this new tech- managing our pastures from virtually anywhere. Wow. #ranchlife #plateaucattleco #agtech

Making the most of our swath grazing with the help of @halterhq Our cows trained to the system almost immediately and it’s been amazing to watch the system in action, move their fencelines and maximize their grazing - all from the warmth of our kitchen while making supper or driving by the field. #gamechanger #happycows #plateaucattleco #lowstresshandling #ranchlife

💫✨Big Day on the ranch for us at Plateau Cattle co! We spent the day working with our cowherd and introducing them to their new @halterhq virtual e-collars — an incredible innovation founded in New Zealand that’s changing the way ranchers manage cattle. We are proud to work with the amazing folks at this company to be one of the first to trial these collars in Canada. We brought our cow herd home from their winter pasture for calving and started them on a small swath grazing section. Our cows picked up the training faster than we ever expected and the whole virtual fence system is impressively low-stress for both animals and humans (the cues are gentler than a touch from an electric fence). Watching them respond, learn, and settle into the technology is nothing short of amazing. We’re always looking for tools that support good stewardship, low-stress handling, and smarter grazing - and this might just be the greatest invention since barbed wire! 🤠 Here’s to innovation that works with the land, the livestock, and the people who care for them both. #PlateauCattleCo #RanchInnovation #lowstresshandling #Virtualfencing #StewardshipinAction

Day 1 -What a day! Thanks to the amazing @halterhq team for the help & support getting our cows e-collared today -it went so smoothly and the cows became accustom to the collars within minutes. This technology will allow us to virtually fence, move & monitor our cows. It’s so exciting to work alongside people who are just as passionate and excited as we are about what this technology will bring. And we are so proud to be one of the first ranches in Canada to trial this big advancement for our beef industry. The opportunities are “virtually” at our fingertips - protect riparian areas, minimize fencing infrastructure and labour, maximize pasture management strategies-breeding/conception rates…all from our phone. We are still wrapping our heads around the possibilities. . Tomorrow is Day 2 Training the cows with the collars. Stay tuned! More to come! #gamechanger #agtech #pasturemanagement #landstewardship #ranchlife

In Ranching there is a lot of Life. The animals and the life we share with them are the heart of our operation and what we Love most. Sadly, in the blessings that come with all of the Life, inevitably comes Loss. And this loss is a hard one. A ranch mascot, ambassador and friend, “Tommy” left us as he came to us over 20 years ago…we didn’t know where you came from and sadly, don’t know where you went. You just arrived one day - a bundle of orange fur and prowess, and you remained ranch yard boss until we last saw you. Pest control extraordinaire, you brought comfort and presence. You Loved people and pets and created a large fan base of all whom you met. You happily endured frigid winter temps in our old calving barn helping us with late night checks, until the day we built a heated tack room…and when it was apparent your healthy physique led to diabetes you took every needle twice a day with a purr. We will always look for you- although in different ways than we have this past week. Thank you for living your best nine lives with us Tommy. You made ours better. #ranchlife #ninelives #plateaucattleco #ranchcatsofinstagram #barncat

Turn out to our summer mountain pastures is our favourite time of year. Part of our cow/calf herd and handsome bulls- go to the magical Mt. Livingstone Range. Here in the heart of our eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains they graze on lush native grasslands and drink from clear mountain streams. Trucked from our ranch homeplace, we sit with them until they settle, allowing our mother cows and their calves to mother up before letting them roam free for the summer months. It is a special place and one worth protecting. #luckycows #ranchlife #plateaucattleco #alberta #nativegrasslands #workingdogsofinstagram #ranchhorse #albertabeef
