A few days ago we lost our precious Rose. She was the sweetest, spiciest, funniest girl who was our best friend for her last four golden years. She had respiratory issues the entire time we knew her. This past weekend, those issues became much more severe, and sadly, after two days of full hospitalization, with no significant improvement and a great deal of stress and discomfort for her, along with the guidance of the vets, we decided it was time to say goodbye. We’re grateful that we were able to hold her during her last moments. Although she was still struggling to breathe, she settled down and became peaceful in a way she had not been for days, because we were with her and she was no longer isolated in an oxygen tank in a scary hospital. She was 15 but she was so tough we thought we'd be together for a few more years. We adopted her from @maedayrescue in 2021. She obviously did not have a great life before us and it took a long time for her to realize that she was safe and loved and once she did, she became the snuggliest girl. Demanding pets by digging into us, ramming her tiny head into our chests, sleeping curled up into our bodies at night. If we were sitting, she was on our lap. We'll miss her toothbrush antics, her digging and ripping up her blankies and beds, her trotting across the room like a tiny horse, her barking with excitement for treats, her constant watchful eye. For a tiny 5lb creature she filled a room. We're grateful that she came into our lives and we'll miss her forever.
Happy 4th Gotcha Day (and according to Embark 15th bday!) to Rose!! Rose was a stray the shelter and rescued by @maedayrescue ! First three photos are from her first week with us and three more recent! Her face has gotten a little frosty! Rose is a real 3,3,3 success story. It took her a really long time to decompress, start trusting us (and stop biting us!) and accept that she is safe, but in the last few years she has become a real cuddle bug. She curls up in bed with us and always wants to be near, sometimes curled up on our shoulders. She's still a scaredy cat sometimes but she's also a maniac, and definitely one of the funniest dogs ever with all her quirks (biting blankets, guarding toothbrushes, digging us out of bed)

We never got around to posting Grace & Frankie's DNA! They are 42% related! We believe Grace is maybe a few years older than Frankie (they are estimated to be around 12, so Grace maybe 14+). They are the sweetest sisters.

Our sweet Grace suffered a series of seizures on Friday. We got her into the vet right away and then on Saturday we saw a neurologist. She is twisting around to the left and does not have motor control of her back legs (though she is a little stronger today - we hope that continues to improve). Three different vets we spoke to said it was very likely brain tumors. The neurologist talked us out of putting her through an MRI and possible radiation as it would be very taxing on her small geriatric body with her co-morbidities (bad heart, elevated
liver levels). She said the anesthesia was a real risk. So the plan is to keep her on kepra 3x a day, and prednisone and her heart meds. They said she's not in pain, though she is confused as to why she can't run across the house. Frankie is being a great nurse (though she and Rose are a little freaked out by the situation). We may be on borrowed time with Grace but we're going to make it as comfy and loving as possible. She truly is the sweetest baby.
Rose! Our top concern with adopting Grace & Frankie was Rose's feelings. She had recently been very picky/fussy about eating (partially due to her kidney disease) and seemed lonelier when we left the house (hiding in her cave bed while we were gone). She's not really a dog's dog but she seems to appreciate having a pack around. It's been a month and we can't believe how chummy she's been getting with Grace & Frankie! She's been eating on their schedule (and not forcing me to hand feed her!) and they've all been hanging out together on the couch when we're out. Rose hates the outdoors but seems genuinely sad when we take the girls out for walks and waits by the door for them to come back (we drag her out to the park with them once in a while too). Rose has been our longest resident (3.5 years ago we adopted her also from @maedayrescue ) she's crazy and quirky and we glad she's been enjoying having company.

Meet Frankie! She's a supermodel with gorgeous brown eyes that always seem to smize! She's fast as lightning and once you say 'yes' she's on your lap faster than you can blink. Once she's on your lap, not even standing up will get her off, she is glued! While she came here a little timid, a mischievous streak is emerging as her confidence grows! She will encourage Rose to eat by watching where every grain of rice falls out of her bowl and then swooping in as her personal cleanup crew. She tolerates Grace licking her for 18 hours a day. She loves a nap and a good bed.
