Emmy-nominated Main Title Designers Katrina Crawford and Mark Bashore chatted with Indiewire about their iconic work on The White Lotus, The Decameron, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
They discuss working with legendary showrunner Mike White; combining hand-drawn and 3D elements for The Decameron, and how they “reward people for watching” the main titles. “it’s fun to hide little things or to give things that add meaning,” said Crawford.

A hoard of mischievous rats swarm and scatter to tell stories of escape, sickness, prayer, lust and re-birth in the face of creeping doom. It was created by combining traditional, hand-drawn animation with cutting edge particle and 3D work.
When I saw the new opening credits artwork for @thewhitelotus (Season 3) by @plainsofyonder , it reminded me of this magnificent collaboration between Scott’s and de Gournay.

Excited to share my work on MAX’s The White Lotus Season 3 title sequence.
Color grading and animating this piece was a deep dive into subtle texture, movement, and tone. The rich aesthetic of Thai temple art sets the stage for the season, and every detail from the palette to the motion was carefully crafted to bring that vision to life.
