This shoot was a real checkpoint for me because a few years ago I tried to do a studio shoot with Henry, I think my first time trying strobes to be exact, and I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I ended up just using the model light as my actual lights and those pictures never saw the light of day 💀 Here we are now and I’ve learned so much/ have the ability to learn even more because I understand things way more now. Definitely a continuously fun journey and even more fun when I can reconnect with people along the way. Thank you Henry!!!!
A collection of fleeting moments
1. Shanghai, China
2. Chongqing, China
3. Alishan, Taiwan
4-5. Kenting, Taiwan
I feel like I have so many thoughts around the concept of fleeting moments (memories?). At the forefront of those thoughts is - do you think these people, especially the children, are going to remember these exact moments? Admittedly my memory is shot, so I remember a lot of feelings as opposed to what exactly happened 🥲 Idk, I think as I/we get older these moments become smaller and smaller so it’s easy to forget, but I’m working on it. Something something live in the moment I guess.
Another thing, I’ve realized through these photos just how much power photographers hold. These people are sharing such, clearly, intimate moments with someone they love (I assume) that I’m sure they wished the world could stop so they could experience each other just a little longer. And here I come, a random bystander that sees the beauty in that immortalizing said moment without them knowing. That’s kind of crazy, no?
A few extra notes:
1. That first picture was my last frame taken on the trip. I remember getting to the last few frames lowkey rushing just so I could “get it over with” but I said to myself let me save that last one for something, anything, special. Then low and behold maybe a block away I saw the boy just standing there looking at his family inside the building and his sister (I think) comes running outside to run around him and I knew that was my shot. I prepped my camera settings because I knew I literally only had one shot. Especially because it was as I was walking and I didn’t want to just stand there to awkwardly take pictures of these kids 💀 Everything just aligned perfectly. Without a doubt my favorite picture I took on the trip.
2. The second picture I kind of cheated, you caught me. I took this picture at a river spot where literally everyone flocks to get pictures of the city lights turning on and there are dozens of photographers offering pictures kind of like Times Square. As this one couple was doing a little shoot with one of them I said I don’t care - I’m stealing the shot. Turned out pretty well imo
