This week’s diary page celebrates nettles! As kids, many of us will remember their painful and long lasting stings and searching for dock leaves to ease the discomfort. Little did we know that what we saw as one of nature’s villains was actually one of her heroes too. Nettles makes such an important ecological contribution to both our health and the health of our environment. In this piece @pixie.mo Mo Kendall rightly reveres the nettle. She also speaks of her hopes to learn to spin nettle stems into yarn. Every February, I try to visit these springs to welcome and give thanks for the seasonal signs starting to emerge outdoors.
We're called to get, or look, close to see them: the dainty snowdrops, the tiny openings on the leaf buds, the delicate leaves pushing up out of the mud. Offering our attention gives the reward of witnessing the beautiful arrival of fresh, soft, new colour and life.
Where the water also bursts out from under mud, mystery, and fallen leaves is a potent place for reflection and dreaming.
