It's hard to express my sincerity without feeling like I'm posturing but I'll try my best with vulnerability: I've always been a bit bleak with my outlook for the future but seeing the juxtaposition of past suffering and present peace makes me think things can be okay. A small child roller skating through a former genocide prison is something I'm still processing and I've witnessed a lot more tragic things around SE Asia since. The palpable humanity of daily life/routine is precious - I didn't come here to find myself (despite everyone joking about it with me) but I do think I finally found a reason to like everyone else. Resilience is the foundation of true beauty.
Been thinking a lot about observation, spectacle, tradition, preservation/conservation/restoration, the western gaze/privilege, social media, technology, and the purpose of photography.
Not sure my thoughts lead anywhere, though.
Still sad to hear of Steve's passing. Truly one of the best to ever do it and I consider myself beyond lucky to have had the chance to see Grim Reaper live twice. Such an inspirational presence and all around good person gone too soon.
