Nitro - Maddness and Justice Mc : Defection 894 1993 Back in the early days of Defection, the airwaves were pure electricity. If you tuned in at the right time, you could catch MC Maddness and Justice shelling it down live across London, bringing that raw pirate radio energy that made stations like Defection legendary. No scripts, no polish, just straight passion, bars, jokes, reloads, and vibes pouring out of the speakers. Justice had that natural frontman presence even back then. You could hear the confidence growing every set, the voice cutting through the static while the city locked in. Years later he would go on to become the frontman of @Sigma after a long stint @metalheadzmusic , taking that same energy from pirate radio rooftops to massive stages and chart success. MC @djmaddnessofficial was another important piece of the culture. Deep in the pirate radio trenches, learning the craft live and direct, building connections and understanding how the underground moved. Later on, Maddness went on to run Freek FM, carrying the pirate tradition forward and giving another generation a platform to broadcast their sound across the city. That was the thing about Defection in those days, you never knew who was going to pass through the studio or who would later become part of UK music history. Pirate radio wasn’t just entertainment, it was a training ground, a community, and a launchpad. The tapes, the aerials, the late-night broadcasts, the shout-outs and rewinds, all of it became part of the foundation for what came after 📡🔥

Defection wasn’t just pushing boundaries in the music, it was innovating in how it stayed on air. One of the key strategies we developed was what we called the “jack-in-the-box.” Instead of leaving transmitters exposed and easy to find, we’d drop them down into pipes and secure them using a car jack, locking them in place, hidden, and hard to reach. At the time, this wasn’t common. Most setups were still vulnerable, easy for the DTI to track down and remove. But this changed the game. Suddenly, even when they knew roughly where the signal was coming from, getting to it was a different story. It slowed them down, threw them off, and for a good stretch, had them completely baffled. That breathing space meant everything. While they were trying to work out what was going on, Defection kept broadcasting, kept building, kept pushing the sound forward.
