Exactly one year ago, I took a class taught by @laura_chenault . She taught how to make stencils, an acetone copy transfer method, and stamp-carving (linocut)! That day, I made this zine, featuring those three methods.
After class, I got some cheap linocut tools for $15 and bought the local dollar store’s complete supply of Pink Pearl erasers. I love how accessible this craft is!
(Shout out, as well, to @cactuscloudsart and @pinkeraserart for all the videos I learned from!)
I have now carved over 234 stamps (mostly tracing other people’s art and always giving credit where it’s due). I recently started a drawing class and I’m excited about expanding my repertoire and carving more original work. Yay linocut!!

@cactuscloudsart of @pinkeraserart asked if I’d be willing to show & tell more of my block carving kit I had shared in my Stories.
I carve lino/rubber blocks in different areas. Home: my project table, patio, kitchen counter, sofa. Out: coffee shops, bars, markets. I upgraded my carving go-kit from just a pouch with tools tossed in (do not recommend) to this slim vintage metal tool box measuring about 12”x6”x1.5”.
I use the lid as a carving surface on-the-go. I secured a non-slip piece inside the lid, and added a stiff felt piece that’s removable to shake remnants into the trash. My pfeil tools fit into an old stationery box (a friend used it as a gift box to me) that fits in the tool box.
My kit also includes: a craft knife for cutting lino/rubber, an awl for picking out carved bits, a couple toothpicks for applying glue to carved slivers to shove into spots I didn’t want carved (it happens), glue pen, mechanical pencil and fine Sharpie for drawing designs, ink pad and paper for test printing, a cheaper carving tool (if someone wants to join in), extra craft and carving blades.
And I keep a couple rubber erasers in the kit so I have something to carve when I’m out instead of packing bigger blocks, or when I just want a smaller print. The thicker rubber makes tiny prints easier. The test print paper shown here is from fingernail sized rubber bits I carved.
@cactuscloudsart is an eraser carving queen, her pieces are precise and pretty! My rough and dirty carving style hasn’t evolved much from my punk rock teens. Definitely get your how-tos from Serena. This concludes my Show & Tell. Thanks for looking.👁️
Making a font using erasers! Pt.1 ✏️
I’m reversing each letter so it prints the right way around, and carving multiple letters per eraser to experiment with levels of detail. Once printed, I’ll scan everything in and refine it digitally to build the final typeface.
Please don’t copy my carving technique - I know some clips show me carving toward my hand. I use very sharp tools with minimal pressure and work slowly (the videos are sped up), but for safety, always carve away from your hands!

At the Indie Bookstore Celebration I took the liberty to sign copies of my book at @bookmansaz River! You can find them there now!
When I was a kid I lived at the Mission and Valencia libraries, but when I found something that I needed to keep we only ever went to Bookman’s. I spent hours scouring the orange bookshelves, finding books that inspired the stories I was always writing.
So as I was packing up my eraser art activity yesterday, I made my family wait a few moments on lunch so I could create a magical moment for myself, and signed the books. 🥰 These signed copies are at Bookman’s River!
