‘Pajarito’ is playing this week at @animatricksfestival in Helsinki, Finland May 14th-16th alongside a bunch of great films. Thanks so much for having me!

This is one of those shots that definitely only really comes together at the comp stage. I was really married to the idea of having the shot pan up to the sky and the next shot be birdseye view, although it did involve making a pretty long painting for the branches for it to work. A lot of the film is about looking up and looking down which only makes sense if you watch it. . . . . #art #artist #birds #nature #animation

As summer approaches another school year as a teacher is over. My first group of students is graduating, but I can’t help but reflect on the state of academia and animation in the wake of the semesters closing. On social media I keep seeing animation teachers express shock and sorrow at the closures of their colleges (UArts, California College of the Arts, Hampshire College, etc.), and many of us with institutions still standing have been losing experimental and graduate programs as a result of budget cuts. SVA, where I teach, included. I can’t imagine one day finding out my class is not running again. Animation as an industry is in such a strange place as well. So many wonderful artists have pivoted to other day jobs to support themselves, and those of us who still have jobs in the industry keep seeing them become more volatile and contract based. The future of art and teaching is fleeting, and it’s easy to feel it slipping away from us these days. In these moments however, I can’t help but notice that we are still drawing, still animating, still creating work meaningful to us. Despite it all that gives me hope. Much love to all the artists out there contemplating the future. As a community we find strength in each other. . . . . #art #collegeteaching #animation

My dialogue shots usually shift a lot between the boarding and rough stage. I really find the posing once I start doing character layouts and use some reference of myself acting it out. The boards were done a year before the roughs too so you can really see how much more sure of the character acting I was by the time I got around to animating these shots. Anyone else dislike boarding and want to jump straight into the animating on character shots like this? . . . . . #art #artist #animation #bts #2danimation

This whole scene uses looped hand painted backgrounds to evoke a sense of fuzziness and movement in the dark. I had never done that sort of things with backgrounds before, but it was certainly a tedious experience! This was definitely the most complex shot in my film, but also one of the first I did. The background animation was a total of 64 individual paintings I worked on at @djerassiprogram during a storm that had us on generator power. Luckily I don’t need a computer to paint! (Just a lamp was enough) It’s surreal to think I got this done in 3 days from blender mockup to painted backgrounds to digital character animation and comp, but I’m glad I stuck to my vision on this shot, it’s my favorite one from the film. . . . . . . #art #animation #bts #process #2danimation
