๐ฟ๐พ Indigenous knowledge systems and practices develop from coexistence and daily interactions with #nature over long periods of time. This manifests in health practices, food systems, traditional livelihoods, land use, cultural expressions, and values that are viable, sustainable, and exemplify living in harmony with nature. ๐ณโ๏ธ #BiodiversityDay
As we celebrate International #BiodiversityDay, let us recognize and promote #indigenous knowledge systems' valuable contributions to biodiversity and support resistance to threats and violence against the peoples and communities who are defending our planet. ๐๐ฟ

In the Philippine Cordillera region, food has never been just food. For the Indigenous Peoples here, the Bontoc, Ibaloy, Ifugao, Isneg, Kalinga, Kankanaey, and Tinggian, a meal is an everyday expression of a deep relationship with the land. It is the source of food and of life itself.

The book highlights how a personโs well-being is deeply interconnected with their community and the more-than-human world โ including ancestors, spirits, and unseen forces that offer guidance and protection. By recognizing and nurturing these relationships, indigenous healing practices seek to restore balance within the environment, address illness, and sustain wholeness in our bodies and spirits.

In Baguio City, a community of women is keeping ancestral food traditions alive, one garden at a time. Through "๐๐-๐ฬ๐ง๐ ," the Ibaloy practice of indigenous home gardening, they are growing safe, nutritious food, preserving heirloom seeds, and healing their communities from the ground up.

๐๐ข๐ ๐-๐จ ๐ง๐ข ๐๐๐ is a project aiming to revive and celebrate ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐ฌ in the Cordillera: the seeds, the soil, the farmers, the knowledge, and the spirituality behind it all that have quietly kept communities alive and whole until today.
The project works alongside Indigenous farmers in Besao, Mountain Province, and home gardeners in Baguio City. Mostly women. Mostly elders, and increasingly, the youth. Together, they carry what they've always known: that food is not just sustenance. It is culture. It is identity. It is life.
Over the next eight months, we will learn stories of farmers, gardeners, elders, and youth on sustaining healthy and safe food sources through the gift of rich biodiversity around them. From these stories will also surface how they reclaim and strengthen their identity and roots through
Ultimately, this journey will highlight the vitality and significance of Indigenous Knowledge, Systems, and Practices (IKSPs), not just for the projectโs partner communities but for the greater Filipino society.

๐ปIndigenous women are carriers of indigenous knowledge and champions of innovation. We recognize their role in passing on knowledge, sustaining culture, and ensuring a livable future for the next generations. This Women's Month, PIKP honors the women who continue to strengthen our communities. ๐๐
Here are some stories from indigenous women from the book "Indigenous Wisdom at Work: Building Resilient Communities in Baguio City," available for reading at the Baguio City Public Library and for purchase at Mt. Cloud Bookshop. ๐
๐ฒ๐ณ The forests in the Cordillera have been home to trees, animals and communities providing food, shelter, medicine and a deep sense of belonging.
As we celebrate the International Day of Forests, Indigenous youth joined an eco walk at Happy Hollow to discuss and reflect on the city's remaining rich biodiversity and its importance to our lives. The youth carried their stories and songs that remind us of our connection to land.
Baeng shi Eskoydaan in Loakan Elementary School ๐ฑ๐ซ๐
Our partner Loakan Elementary School continues to be a school of living tradition, nurturing programs that connect students, parents, teachers, and elders in the shared responsibility of keeping our indigenous knowledge alive.
Today we celebrated the completion of the greenhouse at their Gulayan sa Eskwelahan as part of our partnership on transmitting indigenous knowledge and promoting food sovereignty by involving the whole school community in cultivating traditional crops and practices. We also opened new garden plots which will be a space to:
1. Provide hands-on learning through gardening, workshops, and intergenerational sharing between elders and teachers
2. Promote understanding of indigenous food systems by maintaining baeng gardens, medicinal plant gardens, and agricultural innovations
3. Develop learning materials on indigenous food systems for students, teachers, and the wider community to strengthen the Indigenous Peoplesโ Education Program, and
4. Encourage community engagement by mobilizing resources and facilitating seed exchanges with the Loakan community, enhancing biodiversity of traditional crops and medicinal plants.
Through learning by doing and engaging the community, we ensure that indigenous knowledge continues to live on. By caring for a baeng, we preserve our food systems and medicinal plant traditions so they will not be forgotten. So letโs keep planting, keep learning, and keep our culture alive together!

Progressive Igorots for Social Action, together with Partners for Indigenous Knowledge Philippines, held a Focus Group Discussion on biodiversity and Indigenous knowledge. Through this, the Indigenous youth were able to further root themselves in the struggle for land, life, and self-determination, especially given the situation in Mangkayan and Dalicno, where foreign mining companies threaten the life and livelihoods of the people of the Cordillera.
We assert that the role of the indigenous youth is instrumental in the liberation of land from foreign extraction, in the self-determination of the Filipino, especially the Indigenous People, and in the revitalization of Indigenous culture, even in urban communities.
