Chonkers has taken over @Pier39 and now the internet. 🦭
This massive Steller sea lion (now aptly named Chonkers) has gone viral for showing up at Pier 39’s famous sea lion dock. Towering over the usual crowd, he’s noticeably bigger, lighter in color, and taking charge of his new home. He showed up, stretched out, and the internet can't get enough.
While the regulars at Pier 39 are known for their noise and tightly packed hangouts, Chonkers is bringing a different energy. He's quieter, cooler, and easily double the size. Native to colder northern waters, Steller sea lions like him don’t make appearances here often, which only adds to the excitement.
Now, visitors and locals are flocking to the dock not just to see sea lions, but to see Chonkers, the internet-famous giant who pulled up and took over without saying a word.

Chonkers 🦭 isn’t your average sea lion.
He’s a Steller sea lion spotted at @pier39 —rare, and part of the largest sea lion species, reaching up to 2,500 pounds.
We spoke with @themarinemammalcenter to get the facts and learn why he’s here.
Together, the @sf_port and the Center partner to support the well-being of marine mammals and raise awareness of wildlife along San Francisco’s waterfront.
🦭 The famous Pier 39 sea lions are back! Now's the time to head to the Pier to see the piles of pinnipeds as they swim in the Bay and lounge on the docks. Walk down the left side of the Pier to reach the Sea Lion Viewing Area. It's a spectacular sight and fun for all ages! See if you can spot Chonkers, the superstar Steller sea lion (hint: he’s twice as large as any of the others).
