As a child, I often asked my mother about the origin of my name, Shell. She offered different stories each time - sometimes claiming it honored my great-grandfather Shaul, other times referring me to the seashells that decorate the shores. The truth remained elusive and open to interpretation.
In my mother tongue, my name also functions as a common preposition denoting relationships between objects - like “of” in English.
This linguistic coincidence renders me ubiquitous on the pages of literature yet peculiar in person, as though I carry something both everywhere and nowhere at once.
The repeating chorus of my childhood “Shell mi ata?” - meaning both “Shell, who are you?” and “who do you belong to?” - taught me early to expect questions and provide answers. Today I enjoy playing with this elusiveness of meaning, reflecting the question back: what do you think my name means?

De niño, a menudo preguntaba a mi madre por el origen de mi nombre, Shell. Cada vez ofrecía una historia distinta: a veces decía que era en honor a mi bisabuelo Shaul, otras veces me remitía a las conchas marinas que decoran las orillas. La verdad permanecía abierta a interpretación.
En mi lengua materna, mi nombre también funciona como una preposición común que indica relaciones entre objetos - algo parecido a “de” en español o “of” en inglés. Esta coincidencia lingüística hace que mi nombre sea omnipresente en la literatura y, al mismo tiempo, peculiar cuando se refiere a una persona.
El estribillo de mi infancia, “Shell mi ata?” - que significa tanto “Shell, ¿quién eres?” como “¿a quién perteneces?” - me enseñó pronto a esperar preguntas y ofrecer respuestas. Hoy disfruto jugando con esta ambigüedad y devolviendo la pregunta: ¿qué crees tú que significa mi nombre?
