Hard Softness is a site-specific mural that explores the tension between movement and stability, individuality and connection. It combines hand-painted elements with 2D frame-by-frame animation, created during a live painting process at this year’s
@openoutfestival in Tromsø, Norway, under the festival’s theme “Chosen Family.”
The animation moves within and against the painted frame - a structure that gives hold, yet in its material presence feels soft, almost fluid. The work plays with perception: Is the painted world containing the movement, or is the movement giving life to what is painted?
The projected animation, a hybrid being, represents the shifting, undefined nature of the self. It shows an identity in motion, flickering, growing, dissolving. Around it, the painted mural provides a soft structure. It forms a visual counterpoint of grounding, interwoven forms, and represents the chosen family, the ones who hold space for fluidity without demanding definition. Chosen family here is understood as more than people alone: it is the energies welcomed into one’s life that nurture the good seeds within.
