A aquacultura celular é uma área promissora que pode vir a revolucionar a forma como produzimos alimentos marinhos. Os parceiros do projeto INOVACEL estão comprometidos com a sustentabilidade e a trabalhar no sentido de melhorar este processo, com vista à introdução no mercado de novos produtos que não comprometam os recursos naturais disponíveis no meio ambiente.
De uma única célula nasce uma nova forma de alimentar o mundo - menos pressão nos ecossistemas, mais proteína sustentável no prato.

We did it, again, this time with Tisochrysis lutea! 🤩
As part of the @algaevertical project and in collaboration with Necton (@phytobloom ), we isolated several bacterial strains from the microbiome of industrial Tisochrysis lutea cultures and tested them at lab scale. From this work, 3 bacterial strains showing positive effects on the microalgal cultivation were selected.
The selected bacterial strains were then scaled-up and co-inoculated with T. lutea under outdoor conditions! ☀️
This experiment was performed at Necton’s facilities, where we tested the effect of the bacterial strains on growth and biochemical composition of the selected microalgae.

Yesterday, together with Necton (@phytobloom ), we had the pleasure of visiting the wastewater treatment facilities of @aguasdoalgarve in Faro/Olhão. 💧
This infrastructure serves approximately 113,000 inhabitants, ensuring effective wastewater treatment for the region.
This visit allowed us to deepen our understanding of the treatment process, the methodologies employed, and the quality standards that must be met throughout the cycle. Given our involvement in several water treatment-related research projects, it was a valuable opportunity to explore the equipment used for nutrient monitorization, filtration and sterilization.

In the scope of the Algae Vertical project, several bacterial strains were isolated from the microbiome of industrial cultures of Nannochloropsis sp., and tested at lab-scale to see the effect of these isolated strains on the culture. This allowed for the selection of 2 strains to co-inoculate with the culture under outdoor conditions!
In collaboration with our partners and friends at PhytoBloom - Microalgae by Necton, we just finished that experiment in their facilities, where we tested the bacterial strains to promote the growth and biochemical composition of the microalgae species Nannochloropsis sp. 🙌

In collaboration with @phytobloom , our student @neesbeatriz is performing an experiment comparing the growth of microalgae in hydroponic drainwater and in different production systems, in the scope of her PhD thesis.
For this, pilot-scale flat panels and raceway ponds are being used for the trial at Necton’s facilities 👩🔬

Today is the World Water Day! 💧
It’s important to find solutions to decrease the demand for freshwater, as well as reuse wastewater.
We are part of 2 projects that contribute to this topic: ALGACYCLE and @realmalgae
Here, we are using drainage water from soilless plant production facilities as a source of water and nutrients for production of microalgae!
