Using sidechain audio instead of Tetrad’s oscillators, a dry guitar signal is routed straight into the mixer bus, then sent through the granulator and plate chain. The whole patch is running on the Shimmer Verb FX preset for those lush, evolving textures.

In this final instalment, @gadisassoon explains how Tetrad’s QUAD modules (Oscillator, AM, Granulator, Plates) each run four parallel voices. Open a block’s MACRO tab to set parameters shared by all voices—like oscillator wave shape or global plate decay—then dive into the QUAD tab for per-voice tweaks such as transposition, AM depth, or individual resonator tuning. Some controls, like the granulator’s pitch shift, exist in both layers: one knob to sweep them all, another to sculpt each strand. Mastering this Macro/Quad balance is key to shaping motion and space in your patches.

"Signal Flow" is the third instalment of @gadisassoon ’s guide to Tetrad.
Signals in Tetrad move in a U-shape around the central visualiser: four oscillators flow top-down into the 4×4 Matrix Mixer, then out into the quadraphonic processors. Here, amplitude modulation, granulation, and plate resonators can be dialled in with dry/wet or depth controls—each stage preceded by state-variable filters for precise spectral shaping.
Finally, the four chains are placed on a sound stage and mixed down to the stereo output of your MIDI track, or routed directly from the Quad Output. (Note: access to quadraphonic output varies by DAW.)

TETRAD is out today on @physicalaudiouk . Based on the process of my album Modes of Vibration, it started as an experiment in tangible synthesis and embodied algorithms with the team of @nemus_project , a quadraphonic “sculpture-based synth” installation and performance based on four slashed plates with transducers. The process was a feedback loop between composition, synthesis research, mechanical and algorithmic design: now it’s a plugin. The idea is simple: like with the real plates, you excite them with wave-shapeable sine waves. But in the real world each performance, installation and studio production provides a spatial experience that you just don’t get in a DAW, so we tried to imagine how that experience could inspire new tricks in the box. We kept the constraint of “thinking in fours”: everything is quadraphonic. The spatial panning inspired a unique variable-quadrature LFO controlled quadraphonic AM module, the way fast-fragmented geometric waves elicit granular attacks when fired at the transducers inspired a unique quadraphonic granulator module with variable windows. The Quad VCO is one of my favourite features, allowing anything from unstable analogue-like tones to music-theory based four-part harmonies. To bring it all to life, we programmed a powerful modulation matrix. The result is a uniquely versatile computer music tool that can be used both as a generator and processor. There is much more to it, and I look forward to sharing details on each component in the coming weeks. It was real labour of love and I can’t thank enough @_thisisntfood_ and Craig at @physicalaudiouk for giving me the opportunity to realise what is a real dream come true.

A highlight from Tetrad, my upcoming collaboration with @physicalaudiouk : the 4-voice VCO has two unique tuning modes I’ve been dreaming of for a long time, CHORD and MODAL, based on functional harmony. In CHORD mode you can select chord type, inversion and drop voicing for constant structures, meaning that for any note you play will become the root and the VCO will be tuned to construct that chord; MODAL mode implements a midi note tonal quantiser, so once you select a key, mode, voicing, inversion and drop voicing, the the output will be locked to that key and mode, effectively harmonising a scale. It’s incredibly fun to play, and has some really practical musical uses.
Tetrad will be available in June, but if you want to support the huge amount of time I’ve poured into this project, you can preorder a license directly from me on bandcamp for the lowest price until it officially releases, at which point it will only be available through the official Physical Audio website. It’ll be a bit of an analogue process as Bandcamp isn’t set up for that, but you’ll be helping me hugely and you’ll also get some fun perks like the max patches behind the plugin ❤️🎛️
