What is the difference between noise, sound, music? ‘Noise’ is often used to describe sounds we don’t want — or don’t value aesthetically. ‘Music’ is often expected to have certain elements — melody, harmony, rhythm. But it’s not that simple. Techno evolved from post-industrialization — the rhythm of the factory meeting the rhythm of the drum machine. Beethoven’s 5th mirrors the crash of military canons — but why can’t the canons themselves be instruments? The hammering of rain on a roof can be terribly distracting — or looped on YouTube to help us focus. Can we learn to hear no difference?
