‘We have basically been destroying every since river in the country' My last day @theipaper today so sharing two of my (many many) favourite projects, with two people who have been tirelessly campaigning to save Britain’s rivers. Swipe for Feargal Sharkey (yes, that one, from The Undertones) describing just how much of a perilous state the UK’s waterways are in, after years of sewage pollution and agricultural run off going unchecked by underfunded authorities. And Mark Barrow, an underwater cameraman, showing us the pollution in his local river, the Wharfe in Yorkshire - joined by the courageous @lucieheath who donned her waders in the name of journalism to see exactly what’s lurking beneath British waters.

💸 'Money talks' seemed to be the phrase on everyone's lips when @vicky.spratt and I headed up to the Lake District for @theipaper to speak to locals about a boom in second homes and holiday lets that has priced them out of the areas they grew up in. 🏞️ It's not a new problem, but the stamp duty cuts introduced by former Chancellor Rishi Sunak during the pandemic combined with a lack of investment in new, affordable housing, has exacerbated the issue, leaving many with little option but to move away from the area. Alex Winson grew up in Windermere but has been forced to move 35 miles away. He now commutes into the National Park for his job as a key worker supplying food and hospitality essentials to local businesses. Alex is clear on what he thinks is to blame for the lack of housing for locals. It’s not everyday you see a photo you took on the front page of a national newspaper @theipaper . Equal pegging with WAGatha Christie no less, which gives you some idea of how brilliant @vicky.spratt ’s writing is. To mark the release of her book, ’Tenants’, an extract of which is in the i today, we went back to the council flat her grandparents were given in the 1950s to make a film about the history of social housing. It blew my mind when she told me more than 40% of people lived in social housing by the end of the 1970s. Having secure, stable housing on that scale is something alien to a lot of our generation. Vicky explains how we went from having social housing that we prided as a national asset to today’s housing crisis.

Shooting “Shout Out Loud”, a documentary about the queer history of Eltham Palace made me so aware of the huge gaps in my personal knowledge and our collective understanding of our own history.
