A big thank you to artists Jade Doskow, Claudia Hausfeld, Magali Lambert, Nicolas Lambouris, Dimitris Polychroniadis, and Hannah Subotnick for their remarkable contributions to our new workshop cycle, "Learning from the Artists".
We were also honored to have Scott Walden – Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Nassau Community College and holder of the Michelis Chair at the University of Crete (2026–2027) – conduct the discussion.
It was a privilege. [Image: Yael Martínez, Luciérnaga (Firefly), Prix Pictet Shortlist event, Théâtre Antique, Rencontres d'Arles 2023.]

Is it time that we start using more images when we do philosophy? This was one of the questions set in this morning's presentation for the philosophy students of Dr. Dawn Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Hull. The talk was part of a fantastic course designed by Dr. Wilson inviting students to work with the image -right down the Lab’s alley! Really grateful to be joining forces and rooting for the power of the image and its potentialities for philosophy! Thank you Dawn for the invitation and all the support!

“It’s war, let’s marry” is the title of this project, and perhaps not the most obvious connection one would make. Japanese artist Mumuko has made a project on the war in the Ukraine and philosopher István Zárdai expands the image by introducing philosophy of action and diachronic agency, offering one more reading and opening the spectrum for discussion. How is it possible that people in Gaza and in the Ukraine can carry on and make choices which resonate with stability under such circumstances? Mumuko’s "It's war, let's marry" and István’s perspective provide food for thought!

Many thanks to both for the collaboration and for their contribution to PHLSPH’s community.

We 'make' and store memories like never before. Do we still wonder how melancholy and nostalgia come into play? Do we try to restore, to reflect or do we distort? In this discussion over coffee between philosophy professor Hans Maes and photographer @atelier_juliescheurweghs , the PHLSPH Lab makes room to discuss the scope of melancholy, nostalgia, the bittersweet, the way they are elicited, how there is no nostalgia when there is no experience and much more. Julie's images operate as a springboard while Hans navigates us in a succinct and simple manner through the different concepts. Follow the link on our bio to read it! Many thanks to Hans and Julie for this discussion and all their support! #melancholy #nostalgia #anticipatednostalgia #philosophyandphotography #distortion #memory #bittersweet #knowledgeshare
PHLSPH Lab went to Helsinki. This year it was just me, but setting a goal that next time we will have a project co-created from the couplings of our growing community to present! Thank you @sarahritterart for using your work as a springboard to investigate the parallels and cross-overs in modeling in science and modeling in research-based projects. A bit of philosophy of science in the mix with the firm belief that the constructed image has a lot of dormant information, waiting to be unleashed! More to be posted soon! Also a big thank you to @helsinkiphotomedia for organizing a thought provoking conference! Keynotes

Did you know that there were color coded maps of London, representing levels of wealth and poverty? Inspired by this finding in her research Clare Strand created the series 'Color of Class'. Philosopher James Lewis shared with us an insightful text on the images and contributed to PHLSPH's 'Philosophical Thoughts on Images'. I should say 'throwback' as both artist and philosopher shared their work a while ago. But I won't. Philosophical commentaries and great work don't work this way. Visit the bio for the link! Thank you @strandclare and James Lewis for your support and your contribution! #philosophyandphotography #socialclass #colourofclass #clarestrand #selfimage
