“Dragon Lady” collection is inspired by the Chinese myth of the “Dragon Gate,” a legendary waterfall that transforms a carp into a dragon if it successfully swim upstream; whereas the cost of failure is its life. To me, this story is a metaphor of rebelling, breaking free and owning one’s destiny- empower women to reclaim their power from the patriarchy and societal constraint.
Serendipitously, I came across fish leather when researching a material/ method to represent my dragon scale and discovered the life cycle of the salmon parallels the “Dragon Lady”- born in freshwater, transforming itself to migrate to the ocean, survive predators to later come back to its home and spawn beautifully one last time to lay eggs- its legacy and completes the cycle.
My collection reflects my personal story with fusion elements, bold colors and layering of tulle to create volume and texture. I am also very fortunate to receive 2 awards this year due to my research and design incorporating fish leather- a forgotten cultural heritage that can be potentially revived to be a sustainable material for the future.
I’m so happy to announce that I had won Telio Impact Award 2024 with my research and experimentation on fish skin as a potential material for the future.
