Phi Palmos

It took until 2025 for Phi Palmos to have his first lead in a musical, in “Delia D.,” a jukebox musical featuring the songs of Jonathan Manalo, which ended its three-month run last June. This September, Palmos is part of the restaging of the theatrical adaptation of the Ricky Lee novel, “Para Kay B.” But aside from acting duties, Palmos is also trying his hand behind the scenes. In “Para Kay B,” Palmos serves as creative consultant of the play, while in Eksena PH’s Shorts and Briefs Festival, he’ll be making his debut as a director in the play Shit. In our Arts and Culture issue, we talk to Palmos about his beginnings as a standup, playing on the shoulders of the giants of Philippine film and theater, and why people keep returning to the playhouse. THE RSVP ISSUE On a cursory search, it is easy to see how Phi Palmos(@phipalmos ) has seen a steady and already significant ride in his artistic journey. But in all of these—the growing legions of adoring fans on and off social media, the cheers in auditoriums, and his evolving acting portfolio—looking at his decade-old body of work, he knows that being an actor goes beyond the roles he plays with but on the statements that go along with these characters—be it as Anthony in #AngHulingElBimbo, Rosanna in @mulasabuwan , Ada in #ZsaZsaZaturnnah, Ganda in @netflixph ’s “Doll House”, and now on his return as Norby in @thereconciliationdinner . A vocal advocate for gender and sexuality discourse, AIDS awareness, and social justice, it goes without saying that solidifying his career means cementing a powerful platform to instill change, in the slightest ways he knows how. To him, even just landing a role he gets to breathe life to on the stage or for the camera, in itself, is a statement worth making—to give visibility to "queer, femme, unconventionally attractive gays of the world". Why? "Dahil mas marami kami," he states. In a declaration, on the heels of his 37th birthday, Palmos chooses to amplify the message that strongly underscores the continuing formation of his career, “Ngayon ko na-realize kung bakit hindi ko nakikita ang sarili ko as an actor before. Because wala akong nakikita na kagaya ko at wala akong nakikitang kamuka ko growing up. Kaya I want what I want now, para kapag may nakakita sa akin na batang bading, sasabihin nya sa sarili nya na, ‘It’s possible for me to be famous even if I’m normal looking, femme, queer’ because when I was growing up, I thought it was impossible. Ang plano ko talaga, take a photo of myself at exactly 12midnight. Para talagang this is 40. These photos were taken at 12:04. Naligo kasi ang badeng kaya ayun hindi sakto. Anyways, hello. THIS IS 40. I actually planned to have a photoshoot. Milestone eh. So dapat daw meron. Pero ang daming nangyari the past months. I had a major operation, among other things that really shook me and my savings. But not everything is bad. I was officially part of the Board of Regent of my Alma Mater and Artistic Director/Adviser of Dulaang Universidad de Manila, the first and official theater group of UDM which I helped put-up in the last couple of years. I’m taping a serye (secret muna) and will have a play this July with @ypcstage with a leading man na talaga namang dream come true. If this is 40, then wala na akong mahihiling pa. Kundi good health para makpagtrabaho pa. At proteksyon sa pamilya, kaibigan at mahal sa buhay. Pero tumatanggap po ako ng regalo, dm niyo lang po ako. Haha! So many things happened in the last couple of years. Im still healing from some of them. But the Universe and Baby Jesus is faithful. I was protected. From bad energies and most esp, bad people. And for that, I am grateful. Gratitude. For everything. So baka nga tama lang na walang pictorial. Just me. No make-up, no filter, no anything. Yung ako lang na lubos na nagpapasalamat dahil umabot tayo ng apat na dekada. At sayo, na patuloy na naniniwala, sumusuporta, at nagmamahal. Maraming Salamat. 🩵
