This canvas has been buried in the woods for two months. It’s been lived in and on, hosted moss, accepted tannins from dying leaves, and been nibbled by slugs. It’s been washed in alcohol and ammonia, rinsed, dried and had backing applied to keep it strong. Materiality is a process. Today, I’ll begin work, letting the materiality of the forest guide the creation of an Arctic memory.

Sometimes things don't work out as planned. I shipped a painting to a patron, and it was lost in shipping. She kindly said she'd prefer another painting to a refund, so I painted this for her.

A Perilous Season. The canvas was buried in the woods for two months. The shapes and sizes of the painted pieces were determined by the marks nature left behind. Acrylic on canvas, roughly a meter square.

When spring finally comes to the Arctic, snow and ice melt on the tundra, revealing scars from snowmobile tracks that will last forever.
