*** The exhibition brings together sculptural works by Ana de Almeida and Valeria Pechena with a sound installation by Deniz Sözen and Tahereh Nourani, examining networks of care as ecological systems. Ex-Voto takes the form of paraffin sculptures oscillating between body fragment and abstraction. Inspired by votive objects, the works speak of experiences of migration and flight and enable ritual transformation. Deniz Sözen and Tahereh Nourani’s Mothering Memories emerges as a polyphonic fabric of lullabies, memories and voices – created in workshops with women from Vienna’s (post-)migrant community – as a medium of community and care.

Looking forward to show you EX-VOTO, an installation and workshop by Ana de Almeida & Valeria Pechena. Ex-voto are votive offerings – small sculptures and objects displayed or deposited as tokens of exchange, as payment, for the fulfillment of an oath or promise. As an artist duo, Ana de Almeida and Valeria Pechena, create an alphabet of wax sculptures – votive offerings of one’s own making – that overtly mediate established belief systems on the one hand and the realm of personal affairs on the other. These are object-centered coping mechanisms that allow the two artists to converge positions of personal situatedness with the complexity of macro-political events that stand behind the fluxes of migration and forced displacement that brought them together. You can see the work in dialogue with Deniz Sözen’s and Tahereh Nourani's sound installation Mothering Memories at the upcoming exhibition Ex-Voto: Mothering Memories, curated by Barbara Malknecht for the project Mothering Ecologies @motheringecologies Come visit us at Philomena+ @philomena_plus from May 8–23. Ex-Voto by Ana de Almeida & Valeria Pechena takes the form of paraffin sculptures that oscillate between body fragments and abstraction. Inspired by votive offerings—small objects presented out of gratitude or as a plea—the works recount experiences of migration or flight and facilitate ritual transformation. With Mothering Memories, Deniz Sözen & Tahereh Nourani provide the soundscape for the installation. In workshops with women from Vienna’s (post-)migrant community, a polyphonic tapestry of sound emerged, composed of lullabies, memories, and voices as a medium of community and care, of healing and resistance. OHrGrüN / VerT d'OreiLLe: Performance by Myriam El Haïk @myriamelhaik on Sunday, 19/04/2026, 3 pm Improv Session with Myriam El Haïk & Golnar Shahyar @golnarshahyar on Monday, 20/04/2026, 7 pm as part of the @salam.music.festival curated by Aline Lenzhofer @alinedezordo Myriam El Haïk combines music and visual art in her works. Starting with minimalist compositions, she develops sign systems that translate musical structures into visual forms. Writing and playing constitute a central part in this process. By consciously subverting conventions, the artist establishes her own rules and systems. Her performance installation OHrGrüN / VerT d‘OreiLLe fits into this working method. Based on the French expression “ver d'oreille” (earworm), the work deals with words and sounds, mistranslations, and their poetic potential to create new meanings and imaginary worlds. The result is a live collage of spoken word, invented language, music, images, and performative actions. Myriam El Haïk continues her subversive play with language in an improv session together with Iranian-Canadian singer and composer Golnar Shahyar. The focus is on theatricality, timbre, tempo, and rhythm of words—their sequences, shifts, and translations into images and music. Based on French and Moroccan-Arabic language fragments from Myriam El Haïk’s works OHrGrüN / VerT d’OreiLLe  and Egorythms, a game of associations, combinations, and transpositions unfolds. Both artists resist fixed meanings and question the power of linguistic rules—not unlike the logic of algorithms. Golnar Shahyar’s practice, which lies between improvisation, composition, and transcultural reflection, meets Myriam El Haïk’s conceptual work with language and notation.
