Myriam El Haïk combines music and visual art in her works. Starting with minimalist compositions, she develops sign systems that translate musical structures into visual forms. Writing and playing constitute a central part in this process. By consciously subverting conventions, the artist establishes her own rules and systems. Her performance installation OHrGrüN / VerT d‘OreiLLe fits into this working method. Based on the French expression “ver d'oreille” (earworm), the work deals with words and sounds, mistranslations, and their poetic potential to create new meanings and imaginary worlds. The result is a live collage of spoken word, invented language, music, images, and performative actions.
Myriam El Haïk continues her subversive play with language in an improv session together with Iranian-Canadian singer and composer Golnar Shahyar. The focus is on theatricality, timbre, tempo, and rhythm of words—their sequences, shifts, and translations into images and music. Based on French and Moroccan-Arabic language fragments from Myriam El Haïk’s works OHrGrüN / VerT d’OreiLLe and Egorythms, a game of associations, combinations, and transpositions unfolds. Both artists resist fixed meanings and question the power of linguistic rules—not unlike the logic of algorithms. Golnar Shahyar’s practice, which lies between improvisation, composition, and transcultural reflection, meets Myriam El Haïk’s conceptual work with language and notation.
