Shaken, not stirred: meet Martini! She might be *slightly* less graceful than other cats, but what she lacks in balance she makes up for with tons of love and personality. She’s waiting to meet you at PAWS’ Old City Adoption Center! This spunky girl has a condition affecting her balance called cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), which means she’s wobbly when she walks. But if you think that slows her down, think again! Martini is a playful, chatty, and very confident cuddle machine who loves exploring, laying in laps, and playing with any toy that crosses her path. Martini is about one year old, and is just one of the many very sweet feline friends who’d love to make your acquaintance at our Old City location. Looking for a senior sweetheart with a 10/10 grandpa meow? Meet Pawl! At 16 years young, this dapper guy is equal parts wise old man and curious little sidekick. He likes to "help out" by following you around like a shadow and inspecting what you're up to, and he absolutely loves affection — one of his cutest habits is to gently paw at you when you stop petting him! Pawl also loves other cats, and is currently living with two other feline friends who he really enjoys hanging out with, chasing, and grooming (he still has bursts of during playtime)! His foster shares that he'd be a great older brother for a shy sibling who needs help building confidence. Pawl has some common senior conditions that are easily managed with daily meds and special food, and he'll go home with a 3 month care package of both! Time-sensitive: this very friendly pup needs a foster (or adopter) ASAP! Jazz has knee surgery coming up on May 21, and the setup in her current foster home isn’t ideal for her recovery. PAWS is providing her surgery and covering all of her medical care, but she needs to rest and heal in a calm householdwhere her post-surgery activity can stay limited. Jazz is a snuggly social butterfly who gets along well with kids, cats, and other dogs. Her current fosters absolutely adore her, and so does their cat (swipe to see them cuddling)! For the sake of her recovery, she’ll do best with two-and-four-legged housemates who will keep things mellow so she’s not tempted to get too playful. She can also get over-excited when walking in super-busy neighborhoods, so a yard or lower-traffic area would be a dream for this sweet girl! PAWS staff was thrilled to attend this year's Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity's annual The Gathering Conference, centered around this year’s theme “A Lesson in Love.” Over three days, community members, advocates, researchers, and animal welfare professionals came together to explore how we can build a more compassionate, equitable future for both people and animals - and how our field can continue growing through reflection, accountability, and community-centered care. A few of the topics our team dove into included: 🐾 Pet loss and grief support in communities of color, and how organizations can become more culturally responsive in conversations around euthanasia and loss 🐱 The impact that fines, fees, transportation barriers, and limited access can have on families trying to reclaim lost pets 🐶 How accessible resources, prevention, and community support can create better outcomes than punishment based systems ♥️ The importance of pausing to recognize bias and asking ourselves: “Am I showing up the way I want to?” One message that especially stayed with us came from a conversation during the conference: perhaps the opposite of love isn’t hate, but indifference. We’re grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing alongside @carecenters and so many passionate people working to create a more humane and inclusive animal welfare movement in Philadelphia.

Songbird and her babies are looking for a foster home — and one of them needs a little extra (very adorable) assistance! Tiny girl Jay has a condition called Swimmer’s Syndrome, which causes her hind limbs to splay out like a frog when she walks. Luckily, all she needs is a little one-on-one “physical therapy” to help build her tiny muscles so she can walk properly! This sweet and social family has been at the shelter for two weeks — which for this litter is more than half of their lives! With how young and fragile they are, every day at the shelter puts these little ones at risk of catching an illness that can quickly turn life-threatening. We’re basking in the post-glow of our 10th annual Philly Loves PAWS day, and nothing beats this feeling! Yesterday marked our 10th annual Philly Loves PAWS Day. and we are so deeply grateful to the nearly 70 incredible local businesses who donated a portion of their sales back to PAWS and collected pet pantry donations, as well as every single person who showed up to shop, dine, sip, sweat, and support them throughout the day. We’re deeply passionate about supporting the pets and people of Philadelphia at PAWS. But part of what makes Philly Loves PAWS so special is that it also gives us the chance to shine a spotlight right back on the amazing businesses that support our mission all year long. So many of them have adopted from us, fostered with us, donated, volunteered, hosted events, or simply believed in what we do from day one. PAWS truly would not exist without the support of our Philadelphia community, and it’s such an honor to celebrate the businesses that help make this city a place we’re so proud to call home. Snuffleupagus here asking the important questions! When she’s not busy acting as our Philly Loves PAWS ambassador, this sweet-and-snorty princess spends her time melting the hearts of everyone she meets. Now she’s on the hunt for a foster home where she can soak up all the love and affection you have to offer! Described as a total “ball of fun,” Snuffleupagus loves spending time with other dogs, showing off her goofy personality, soaking up butt scritches (or any other attention that you have to give), and spreading joy and laughter wherever she goes. One volunteer shared: “She was so easy to handle and an absolute delight to have out. She loves pets and scratches, takes treats nicely, and is a goofy, playful girl in the yard. Love her!” Snuff recently went on a day trip and absolutely crushed it — enjoying snuggles, a woodsy walk, and her very first pup cup! Her day-trippers described her as “happy, friendly, affectionate, and low-energy,” noting she was polite around other dogs and even calmly observed a cat from a respectful distance. She’d likely do well in a home with just about anyone after proper intros! Snuffleupagus is around 2 years old, and will be ready for adoption once we learn more about a mild limp and some skin allergies she arrived with.
