Shout out to Virgil, whom I spoke with about his Tourist vs. Purist concept at the time he was working on the Boston or MCA show I think. That conversation partially inspired this diagram about the cycle of observation and conversation as a form of work in my practice, framed through the personas of the Tourist and the Catalyst.
Capital as the driver gear. Profit and speculation create gaps in the system by design. The practice positions itself opportunistically to be moved by the system’s momentum. Opportunity is the window between gap and attention. Access is gained when the attention is meeting the gap - the moment the system and practice lock together. The practice then uses the access, site, material, occasion, conversation, and attention to create value.
One of 6 diagrams for the upcoming publication “OPPORTUNISM.” -
I think there’s a difference between being on a constant search and being in a state of openness. Central to the latter is conversation – about history, memory, about material, about why we come together as friends and strangers at a place. The conditions and occasions for these conversations emerge from a site, its materials, and the structures these materials can support.
Opening a gap in material that is between purposes reminds me of what I try to do in architecture — 1. opening up spaces, 2. making room, 3. inviting opportunity and people. At these construction sites in my neighborhood the gaps are small reasons to return to a place, a destinations to walk to, and markers to keep track of
I picked up these worthwhile reads a few rents ago and figured they could be interesting for a lot of people working on similar things, ideas, practices. Happy to lend them out and drop them off if needed. Lmk

Hokuto-shi, Yamanashi: Situation as Akt 2 will open on June 30th at Gasbon Metabolism (Japan) and will be on view until August 28th.
The solo show offers a reflection on the idea of re-built environments that hold significance in both Japanese and German cultures. The artworks on display materializes a collection of pieces crafted from weathered and charred roof trusses sourced from the Gasbon factory. By adopting a site-specific approach, the exhibition encourages us to attend to the particularities of spaces we inhabit.
Many thanks to Rintaro Yamamoto (@urotan_ri ), Kato (@kt__ppp ), GASBON (@gasbon_gasbook ), Designer Kaziu Ozawa (@kazuiozawa ), CON Gallery (@con_tokyo_ ), and everyone who took me to GASBON earlier this year, introducing me to this special space. @neruhakai , @gillochindox , @soberfeelz , and @heijiroyagi .
