After a year of collaborative exploration, the Atlas of Habitats is here! Created with students and professionals from Austria and Liberia, this platform invites you to discover the hidden worlds of ecosystems and their non-human inhabitants. With an interactive approach, the Atlas invites you to explore a realm that goes beyond traditional ecological boundaries. This platform gathers data on animal habitats from diverse perspectives, such as 3D scanning, thermal imaging, endoscopy, and more, offering an immersive exploratory experience. Users can navigate the Atlas by applying various filters and categories, including material, texture, height, size, species type, location, construction technique, and inhabitation patterns. https://atlasofhabitats.uni-ak.ac.at is now an open-source platform designed to grow, and we’d welcome your contributions through the contact form! The Atlas was conceptualized by Philipp Reinsberg and Magdalena Pietryszyn as part of the INTRA research grant “Interspecies Nursery”. Developed with [Applied] Foreign Affairs, Baerbel Mueller (head), Apoorva Thapa, Maria Bürger, and designed by EXEX Studio. Thank you to all contributors and collaborators @zentrum_fokus_forschung @dieangewandte @appliedforeignaffairs @ioa.angewandte @unido_org @universaloutreach @surfliberia @birdlife_austria @exex_world

„Atlas of Habitats“ is a short film we have presented at „Space for Research“ group exhibition, curated by Zentrum Forum Forschung during Angewandte Festival. The film presents research conducted across natural habitats of animals in Liberia and Austria. Our team spent most of our time with beekeepers, ornithologists, rangers, eco-guards and teachers at Wakolor Forest, Piso Lake and urban areas such as Monrovia, Tubmanburg, Kakata, and Vienna. Through the film, we illustrate our methodology of translating and curating knowledge derived from the natural world, emphasizing an equal engagement with varied ecosystems. Furthermore, the narrative of the film presents the concept of the Pluriverse, referred to as a ‚world where many worlds fit,‘ which portrays nature as an equal participant in the shaping of contemporary spatial environments. This research, led by Philipp Reinsberg and Magdalena Gorecka takes place within the framework of the Angewandte Programme for Inter- and Transdisciplinary Projects in Art and Research (INTRA) and is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Atlas of Habitats, a fragment of our Interspecies Nursery grant, is realized within the [Applied] Foreign Affairs @appliedforeignaffairs at the University of Applied Arts @dieangewandte in Vienna, Austria and is being developed with Maria Buerger @_mariabuerger and Apoorva Thapa @apoorvathapa1

Some footage from our research trip to Liberia as a part of our “Interspecies Nursery” project.  How can we integrate the individual worlds of various beings into an architectural gesture?  The intricate interconnections within ecosystems necessitate a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach in research and design. With a goal of a conceptual design of an open structure for co-habitation, we did an intense research, consisting of 3D scanning, endoscoping, thermal scanning, measuring and filming of natural habitats in Liberian forests, lakes, ocean and abandoned palaces. We spent most of time with beekeepers, rangers, eco-guards and teachers at Wakolor Forest, Piso Lake and urban areas such as Monrovia, Taubmanburg and Kakata. This project takes place within the framework of the Angewandte Programme for Inter- and Transdisciplinary Projects in Art and Research (INTRA) and is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.

Textures and layers The three deck structures are made up of different wood types with certain properties, selected for specific functions. : Robinia piles are ramped directly in the ground, CNC-milled pine beams connect the piles and they also carry the larch deck layer. #angewandtedecks

The ANGEWANDTE DECKS are completed! Join us for a project presentation and collective try-out on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the courtyard of the Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna @dieangewandte . Access via the main entrance and only possible in compliance with the 2,5G rule (PCR-tested, recovered, vaccinated). Kindly register in advance via email to [email protected] /// In 2020 we started to collect ideas, feedback and visions from university members in an open process. Over three semesters with participants from various departments of the university, a collective design was created, as part of the STUDIO HOLZ course at the Institute for Art Studies, Art Education and Art Education (DAE / DEX) supported by the department for Building Construction at the Institute of Architecture (IoA), first ideas were further developed and eventually implemented by many participants. It was important to us to develop the design of the installation in the courtyard within the university, thereby designing the shared space as a participatory project. With the partially indeterminate functionality of the structure, we want to challenge multi-layered possibilities of usability and activities that can be constantly reimagined and reinvented. Thanks to all the people involved!! Project team for design and realisation: Mona Abusamra, Flora Mercedes Goidinger, Charlotte Heller, Lydia Hinteregger, Magdalena Kernegger, Joyce Lee, Wolfgang Miksits, Yeeun Namkoong, Peter Schlager, Stephanie Sentall, Sophia Widmann,Nima Zibaandam Radi, Michalina Zadykowicz Project lead: Philipp Reinsberg, Lukas Allner Student assistant: Veronika Ziller, Jasmit Hof, Ludwig Bachmann With support by: Florian Fend (3d-planning), Helmuth Fahrner (Carpentry), Philipp Hornung (Robotics), central wood and metal workshop #angewandtedecks #conceptualjoining #dieangewandte

On 24/05/19 Daniel spontaneously interacted with our INTERLOCKING SPACES installation @dieangewandte . That day, Daniel simply walked by and we talked a little about the project and during my attempt to take pictures of the structure. He kindly asked me if we need somebody on the pictures. The rest is Daniel’s take. He reacted to grids, axises and oriented his body accordingly. Powerful. Thank you ! Daniel Aschwanden (1959-2021) has been a Swiss performer, choreographer, teacher and dear colleague. He passed away a week ago. What a lose. I met him during my studies and as a student of @appliedforeignaffairs . Rest in perfect piece, Daniel.

01/2019 Some of the constraints for the first INTERLOCKING SPACES installation was to use only one beam dimension 5x5x220 , a rather simple joining principle and an easy to access production method. At the Landesberufsschule MURAU / Styria young carpenters get trained with traditional joining technics for houses, trusses and roofs but also how to use and operate a 5axis pre-cut machine by the industrial pioneer HUNDEGGER . We teamed up with them for the fabrication and installation . Here some images from first tests , progress and errors .. ✌️to @klausmasuda for ROBOT-SOLO intro #conceptualjoining

10/2018 CONCEPTUAL JOINING hosted a workshop with Prof Jun SATO from Tokyo University to teach the principles of #kigumi architecture. Students had to develop interlocking joints of more than two members and accordingly the overall shape . This workshop was the starting point for multiple full scale demonstrators in 2019 with students , just the CJ-Team and me alone ⚒ the project is funded by the FWF - Austrian Science Fond #conceptualjoining
