This one is very special! Proudly announcing “Aftermath and Transitions (Traces Of The Ukranian Underground in Cologne (1994-1996) All profits of this release are going to Svitlana Nianio! Guido Erfen and Michael Springer were part of the Cologne-based experimental collective SHM1, which organized concerts and built an independent music network in the late 1980s. Their connection to the Ukrainian underground scene began when Erfen received cassette tapes and writings about experimental rock from Kharkiv and Kyiv. Fascinated by this music, he later visited Ukraine, built relationships with artists, and helped release the compilation album “Novaya Scena” in 1993. The album showcased diverse and unconventional sounds blending punk, avant-garde, and folk influences, often performed in Ukrainian. Following this release, Ukrainian musicians such as Svitlana Nianio and Yewgeny Taran collaborated with Cologne artists in a series of informal recording sessions. These sessions produced experimental tracks marked by spontaneous creativity, cross-cultural exchange, and minimal production. Some projects, like Erfen’s “Frozen Jungle,” were only finalized years later due to interrupted collaborations and expiring visas.
