Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (Pitt-Johnstown), together with regional industry partners, today launched a first-of-its-kind drone-based bridge inspection initiative at the FutureReady Innovation Center. The center is located in the building formerly known as the Jupiter Building in downtown Johnstown.
The initiative brings together Pitt-Johnstown, Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, JWF Industries, Aerium, Mission Critical Solutions LLC, Horizon Aerobotics Inc., and Mash Engineering in a collaborative effort to develop next-generation methods for bridge inspection using unmanned aerial systems (UAS), LiDAR applications, and related data tools. The project creates new opportunities for students to gain hands-on technical training tied directly to employer needs in engineering, infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing.
Funding for this first FutureReady Innovation Center training program was provided by the Bill Polacek dedicated FutureReady Fund, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies , the 1889 Foundation INC, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
Congratulations to the Center for Metal Arts and Patrick Quinn on receiving the Cultural Affairs Award at this year's Cambria Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner!
Housed in a historic steel mill that once belonged to the Cambria Iron Company, and currently undergoing a major renovation, the Center for Metal Arts is a fitting tribute to the region's industrial legacy — and a vibrant hub for the craft that legacy made possible.
Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation serves as the developer and owners representative for the Center for Metal Arts.
Special thanks to Sue Mann, 1889 FOUNDATION INC, Mike Kane, Angie Berzonski and Community Foundation for the Alleghenies for their incredible and long-term support. They are true champions of this work whose generosity and dedication have made all the difference.

Last week Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation hosted the first cohort of professionals for Heat Pump Design & Commissioning sponsored by Duquesne Light Company….. and 100% of participants “would recommend this course to others”
These professionals learned how to properly size / design / install equipment & ductwork utilizing hands-on instruction from Pennsylvania College of Technology. In addition to learning and practicing the Manual J/D/S calculations (a requirement of the IECC) they also learned the basics of installing Heat Pump Water Heaters to expand their services.
⁉️ When asked the most important things learned, one participant stated “contractor insights and practical book knowledge and use of tools.”
An additional learning module sponsored by ROCIS helped participants understand how to improve indoor air quality for their customers through continuous filtration, without running up energy use.
Finally, Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation helped to connect these small business owners to business growth opportunities that will help them to put these skills to use for more clients in Western PA! And when they’re ready to grow their teams, we will connect them to the talent they need to best serve their clients.
We are already recruiting for the next cohort Nov.17-20.

Pittsburgh Gateways is helping to build a workforce of building performance professionals to address the housing crisis and energy burden in our region.
Watch this short video featuring Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, ACTION-Housing, Inc. and local contractors to learn more about this important initiative.
We're proud to celebrate this important milestone for the Center for Metal Arts. With $6.2 million raised, this project will stabilize and renovate historic former Cambria Iron Works buildings, including an 1864 octagonal blacksmith shop that dates back to the heart of the Industrial Revolution. The building is one of only two National Historic Landmarks honoring America’s steel industry.
"Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation board member Robert Meeder said his organization’s focus on the adaptive reuse of historic landmarks made it natural to get excited about helping the Center for Metal Arts preserve former Cambria Iron and Bethlehem Steel properties."
Center for Metal Arts offers beginner through advanced forging workshops in state-of-the-art facilities and provides specialized tools and equipment for each student. Students travel from across the globe to Johnstown to take lessons with masters in their crafts. (Photo credit and article: @tribdem )
