“Sometimes we taste smells.
All their sweet patter. Once, I broke
my nose on the blue catch
of a pool. How it smelled—
the red rind of pain. A tang.
Oranges, sliced, consumed. Gray
remainders. My mother held cloth
to the bleed.”
