The Wave in the Heart of the City It looks as if the surfer is riding a giant wave in the Atlantic, but it’s just an artificial wave in the heart of Munich. For years, this wave was great fun for surfers and a tourist attraction. Currently, the wave is gone. The exact reasons are a mystery, and whether surfing will ever be possible in the city again depends on many factors, making it rather unlikely. The Jump ° An experienced surfer has finished his ride on the wave and jumps into the Eisbach stream, clearing the wave for the next surfer waiting. ° After the jump, the surfer floats downstream for a short distance before getting out of the water and rejoining the line of waiting surfers until it’s his turn to ride the wave again. ° This process repeats itself until he’s had enough for the day. ° I wish you all a relaxing weekend! ° Photos: Peter J. The Eisbach Wave ° The Eisbach wave in Munich dates back to the 1970s. Initially, the wave formed in the artificially created Eisbach stream, which flows through the English Garden—a very large park in Munich—through various structures. Over the years, sediment deposits created a « natural » wave. ° This so-called « Eisbach wave » became increasingly popular with Munich surfers, internationally known, and a tourist attraction in the city. In the summer of 2025, a tragic surfing accident occurred in which a female surfer lost her life. ° After the Munich public prosecutor’s office closed its investigation, surfing was permitted again under stricter regulations. Following the annual « stream cleaning »—draining and cleaning the streambed—no wave formed at the end of 2025. ° The reasons for this are speculated upon. Since then, surfing in the Eisbach has been prohibited, partly due to the complex legal situation. ° It remains to be seen what will happen next and whether surfing will be possible again in the Eisbach in the future. ° My photos were taken in June 2023.
