My grandfather, Stu Hart, started the Dungeon in the early 1950s. It was his way of taking everything he mastered as an amateur wrestling champion and blending it with his deep love for professional wrestling.
He built The Dungeon on heart and grit and finding out who could get knocked down… and still get back up.
I love being able to carry forward what he started with a new generation.

So the big thing John Cena announced at WWE Backlash was the creation of “The John Cena Classic.” It’s basically being framed as a new cross-generational WWE/NXT tournament concept with a very weird twist that has people both hyped and confused.
Here’s the rundown:
* Cena came out during Backlash and said the idea is to pit current WWE stars against future stars, especially talent from NXT.
* The tournament is supposed to create opportunities for newer wrestlers and give fans more influence over the product.
* A new title/championship tied to the tournament will apparently be introduced.
* The most controversial part: the winner may be determined by fan voting rather than strictly by match results. Cena specifically said even wrestlers who lose matches could still win the overall competition.
That last part is why people online started calling it one of the most “unhinged” WWE concepts in years. Some fans think it sounds fresh and interactive, while others think it completely destroys the logic of a tournament.
The vibe of the promo itself was very “legacy Cena.” He framed it like:
* he’s retired from full-time competition,
* he wants to use his platform to elevate younger talent,
* and he wants the WWE Universe to matter more in shaping stars.
A few other details floating around:
* WWE reportedly sees this as a potentially recurring major event.
* Rumors say it could happen later in 2026, possibly between Survivor Series and Royal Rumble season.
* Netflix is reportedly interested in heavily featuring it internationally.
And honestly, the reason the announcement landed so big is because Cena’s in this strange “elder statesman/final run” role now. WWE promoted it as “history-making,” so fans expected either:
* one last match,
* a Hall of Fame announcement,
* or some kind of executive role.
Instead, he unveiled this experimental tournament concept that feels half wrestling show, half fan-interaction experiment. That’s why the reaction has been all over the place.
