Mothers Day - that was a first for me to take her to a nail salon, she picked out the nail polish color and got a mani pedi… I even put down my armor and got a pedi too and it wasn’t awful. 10 mile run for me, lunch, nail salon, and painted a bird house, I think she had fun and for me it was another happiness memory anchor! Mom’s dementia is declining but I’m glad we locked this one in.
Had some mechanical stiffness and spasms in my back for a few days. Got me a bit concerned as I couldn’t foam roll it out. Rather than sit around, I did a 10 mile run with 10 x 60 second strides and it unlocked all the pain I was feeling.
Might sound counter intuitive, but, whenever I feel *weird* pain in different spots, it’s a signal to me that I’m likely sitting around too much. Getting out and exercising seems to be the cure for most of my aches. I’m not giving medical advice to anyone, but, I think most runners feel better when running…
5th Anniversary of my father Tony passing away. 5th Winter Solstice of doing something outdoors from sunrise to sunset. I’ve written a letter to him every year on this day to check in and reflect on how mom is doing and what’s been going on. I’d call the last twelve months emotionally jagged, financially load-bearing, and the most pressing year I’ve had. Re-reading all the letters reminds me how much I’ve missed those conversations with Tony. Also it’s interesting to see where my head was at a year ago too. I feel like I’ve grown in surprising ways too.
Grateful for those around me to help me get through all this and have to say much of it was because of being in EO and there are too many to name from all the deep conversations I’ve had.
Video is from Tyler and I at Mailbox Peak. We did a double lap on Mailbox Peak and nice to do the first lap with Kris and Danna too. 8000 vert day in the snow covered peak of Mailbox.
13 miles ✅. Met so many new people who just moved to Seattle at the SGLRG (Seattle Greenlake Running Group)… I think nearly 200 people showed up for the 7am run!
10 years ago almost to the date, I ran my first marathon. NYC was a birthday gift to myself and marks my 27th marathon and it almost didn’t happen.
Life has these seasons where it’s heavy either raising children and now care giving for my mom. Last two years it’s been a bit heavy and I haven’t run any marathons. I did minimal training enough to survive and that basically mirrored what’s been going with me.
Exhausted before I got here, this trip actually helped recharge me a bit! There’s just nothing like NYC and the massive crowds cheering all the runners on. So fun to High 5 all the kids and thank them for uplifting all the runners. That’s special, the kids need to know how much the encouragement helps. I had a lot dinners and late night conversations with my cousins which was one of the big highlights of coming out here.
NYC won’t carry you. It pushes you. That pretty much sums it up. Training was light. Life is heavy. But the joy of running my 27th marathon was so fun!
