A pencil tribute to the legendary Bob Power. I’m still meditating on his memory after his passing on March 1. If you don’t know Bob you certainly know his sound. Bob was the recording and mix engineer behind many musical icons including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, D’Angelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello and on and on and on. This whole post could (and maybe should) be about his accomplishments and the genius of his work, Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Illadelph Half-life, Brown Sugar and on... Most of us are lucky if we can claim one masterpiece in our lifetime. Bob was a part of dozens including the work of pure brilliance and beauty that I’ll never get enough of, Buhloone Mindstate by De La Soul. But I wouldn’t be writing this long-ass post if that was the limit of Bob’s greatness. Erase all of Bob’s accolades and you are left with one of the most generous, insightful and nurturing people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Bob taught me a huge amount of what I know about mixing and he did it with humility and humor. He was a trusted encouraging friend and informal mentor as well as one of the classiest elder statesmen in an industry in which integrity is in short supply. He modeled professionalism down to his habit of finding something positive to say even when I was presented him with some seriously subpar song I might be working on. The thing that strikes me the most in the wake of his passing is seeing so many posts on social media celebrating his legacy that all say the same thing. It turns out that Bob had the same relationship with hundreds of artists like me. Everyone recounts Bob encouraging them, coaxing the best out of them and freely teaching them everything he knew without reservation. There’s no confidence like the confidence of a master who shows you his secret sauce. He knows you can’t comprehend the depth of what he’s sharing (but he hopes you can.) I’m going to end this here because I think I’m coming up on the Instagram character limit. (Bob Power had no character limit. See what I did there?) Salute to you, Bob. You will be deeply missed. I, for one, wasn’t done learning from you. I will miss your comradeship.
