A pencil tribute to the legendary Bob Power. Iâm still meditating on his memory after his passing on March 1.
If you donât know Bob you certainly know his sound. Bob was the recording and mix engineer behind many musical icons including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, DâAngelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello and on and on and on. This whole post could (and maybe should) be about his accomplishments and the genius of his work, Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Illadelph Half-life, Brown Sugar and on... Most of us are lucky if we can claim one masterpiece in our lifetime. Bob was a part of dozens including the work of pure brilliance and beauty that Iâll never get enough of, Buhloone Mindstate by De La Soul.
But I wouldnât be writing this long-ass post if that was the limit of Bobâs greatness. Erase all of Bobâs accolades and you are left with one of the most generous, insightful and nurturing people Iâve ever had the pleasure to meet. Bob taught me a huge amount of what I know about mixing and he did it with humility and humor. He was a trusted encouraging friend and informal mentor as well as one of the classiest elder statesmen in an industry in which integrity is in short supply. He modeled professionalism down to his habit of finding something positive to say even when I was presented him with some seriously subpar song I might be working on.
The thing that strikes me the most in the wake of his passing is seeing so many posts on social media celebrating his legacy that all say the same thing. It turns out that Bob had the same relationship with hundreds of artists like me. Everyone recounts Bob encouraging them, coaxing the best out of them and freely teaching them everything he knew without reservation. Thereâs no confidence like the confidence of a master who shows you his secret sauce. He knows you canât comprehend the depth of what heâs sharing (but he hopes you can.)
Iâm going to end this here because I think Iâm coming up on the Instagram character limit. (Bob Power had no character limit. See what I did there?) Salute to you, Bob. You will be deeply missed. I, for one, wasnât done learning from you. I will miss your comradeship.

55 years alive whoâd a thought Iâd get here?
some older folks tell me that Iâm in for my best years
they say âthis is the time when you forget fears
and come into yourself, while you still have your healthâ
remains to be seen, I hope theyâre right
I wake up in the night my achilles are tight
my back feels like I might have lost some fight
in another couple months I should regain sight (cataract surgery)
oh no, the health woes of an old ass man
feels like I found this body in a cold trash can
damn, I can barely stand without letting out a grunt
and it ainât James Brown giving up that funk
âHEYâ whatâs that you say?
âyo, man, you look good for your ageâ
whoâd a known full grown would ever land on me?
whoâd a thought time would get the upper hand on me?
âHEYâ whatâs that you say?
âyo, man, you look good for your ageâ
whoâd a known full grown would ever land on me?
whoâd a thought time would get the upper hand on me?
itâs my birthday!
