The Story Behind James Hetfield's Mesa Coliseum.
A reader of Messengers has questioned whether James and Metallica actually have a Mesa Boogie MkIIC++ Coliseum head in the stable, and fears we might be confusing it with one owned and brought to HQ by their producer Greg Fidelman.
The #4 Mark IIC++ head pictured above and on page 375 of Messengers is indeed a Coliseum (see slide 3) and is indeed owned by Metallica and dates back to 1983/84. This Coliseum head began its life as a IIB that Mike B. of Mesa converted to a IIC sometime in the mid-80s before being modded to a ++, indicated by Mike’s ++ tag above the power chord (as seen in slide 2). Greg Fidelman owns his own IIC Coliseum head, which was sent to Mike B. in 2021 to be modded to a ++. Enjoy these bonus images we couldn't fit into the book.
