As a kid, when I'd step out in Jaipur, I often wondered why there aren't more women on the roads, on the busy streets, why aren't they handling bigger shops, etc etc. They were always confined to the small strolls in the colony or (if feeling adventurous) sometimes to the departmental store. I didn't know back then what it meant, but it makes sense to me now. Being financially dependent on your family takes a lot of control out of your hands, where you go, what you do, who you befriend become second-hand options (not choices). I remember when I was a kid, I wasn't allowed to step out of my house apart from attending school/college. My father would give me some money to watch a movie once in six months with my friends, and I'd dread to ask him again if I can go out. It was only after a year of cutting ties-patchup and self-sustaining, that my family realised that I am an independent individual, (somewhat) free to make my own choices. Whenever I go out, I still count the number of women around me, and the number- it always always makes me question-- where did all the women go?
