Artist Statement: “I've been thinking about "mixed media art" About 7,810,000 Google results and the possibilities of "mixed algorithm art" 1 Google result. Over the past two days, I trained midjourney AI on "wwwunderkammer, wunderkammer, cabinet of curiosity, cabinets of curiosity, feminism, decolonization, futuristic, hyperreal". I trained lensa on photos of me ranging from 6 years old until now. I then used the images generated from both of these platforms in playform AI (a platform I have been using since the early days of 2019. I love the abstractions an artist can achieve with playform) to generate a new set of images. Introducing the work of Doug Rosman! ⚡️👬🕺🏼🕺🏼👯‍♂️⚡️ Doug Rosman (b. Santa Monica, 1991) is an artist and programmer working at the intersection of art and technology. He received his Bachelor of Arts in the Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts Major at the University of California, San Diego in 2014, and his Master of Fine Arts in Art and Technology Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019. He has exhibited and performed at multiple venues in San Diego and Chicago, and will be included in Ars Electronica 2019 in Linz, Austria. As an artist, Rosman treats computational technology both as a tool for creative expression and as the subject matter of his work. Through interactive installations, audio-visual performances and generative systems, Rosman explores our complex relationship with digital technology, and how living in a world shaped by algorithmic feedback loops influences the way we understand ourselves and the systems in which we are embedded. He is currently a lecturer in the Art and Technology Studies department at SAIC. Introducing the work of Joan Truckenbrod! 👩🏻‍🦱🪞👥👧🏻🎭 @joantruckenbrod Joan Truckenbrod’s artworks create an intuitive conduit between technology and nature. She is constantly intrigued by the physical sensations of invisible yet palpable phenomena in the natural world, imaging these ephemeral, transient experiences, creating physical artworks from digital drawings to digital fiber and installations. Developing algorithms embodying mathematical descriptions of these phenomena in nature, translating them into code, creating artwork that materializes this data. Joan Truckenbrod’s artwork is included in international exhibitions, a group exhibition at The Whitney Museum of American Art titled Programmd: Rules, Codes and Choreographies in Art. 1965 – 2018 (2018/2019). Her work has also been exhibited at the IBM Gallery in New York City, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Musée d'Art Modern de la ville de Paris, Les Cite des Arts et des Nouvelles Technologies de Montréal, and the Villa Chianni in Lugano, Switzerland. By emphasizing aesthetics, Lapadat-Janzen seduces the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life. Her media artworks are on the one hand touchingly beautiful, on the other hand painfully attractive. Again and again, the artist leaves us orphaned with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts. By manipulating the viewer to create confusion, she often creates several practically identical works, upon which thoughts that have apparently just been developed are manifested: notes are made and then crossed out again, ‘mistakes’ are repeated. Her works sometimes radiate a cold and latent violence. At times, disconcerting beauty emerges. The inherent visual seductiveness, along with the conciseness of the exhibitions, further complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning. Introducing Rollin Leonard! @rollinleonard 💦💁🏼‍♂️💦 Rollin Leonard is a portrait and new media artist. Having photographed more than 3,000 human subjects, he makes photographs via original methods he invents and hijacks, such as bending light with water to make Water Portraits, projecting faces into cylindrical maps of skin, shuffling pixels with algorithms, or blending flat images into round objects. He pushes the limits of water as an optical tool by using laser cut plastics, etched glass, hydrophobic materials, oils, liquid vinyl, resin, humidifiers, spray bottles, and syringes. While the resulting images are essentially unaltered out of the camera. Rollin Leonard also makes digital animations, such as his Mud Puddle series. His animations are also portraits--moving ones--created by etching glass and coating it with water-repelling material. Leonard makes thousands of little “masks” that force the water into specific shapes on glass. Each water shape refracts the faces or images underneath. Like his Water Portrait photo-sculptures, Leonard’s methods are labor-intensive and largely analog, although the resulting animations can look computer-generated and futuristic. Raised in Wisconsin, Rollin Leonard now lives in Los Angeles. Fascinated by digital semiotics, Gannis takes a horror vacui approach to her artistic practice, culling inspiration from networked communication, art and literary history, emerging technologies and speculative design. Gannis’s work has appeared in exhibitions, screenings and internet projects across the globe. Recent projects include “Portraits in Landscape,” Midnight Moment, Times Square Arts, NY and “Sunrise/Sunset,” Whitney Museum of American Art, Artport. Introducing Jonas Blume @scarboi 💥🎭💁🏻‍♂️💥 Jonas Blume is a video and installation artist who builds his works from conceptual gestures that interrogate the relationship between the individual and its digital replication. He lets his phone write his biography, uses Google Search to create an averaged image of himself, employs neural networks to create fictional doppelgangers, hot-wires beauty filters to maximally beautify himself, and holds performances in virtual worlds to test the boundaries of the cyberbody and digital sociability. While his work manifests as object, installation, video and performance, the underlying denominator is the détournement of digital image technologies by pushing them against their intended purpose towards the brink of collapse. In this liminal state, he excavates their inner workings, and playfully transforms them in ways that confront life and representation, and incite the viewer to situate themselves in a hyperreal visual culture where reality and image-world overlap.He received a BFA in sculpture from Pratt Institute, NY, and an MA in Visual and Media Anthropology from Free University, Berlin.
