A kitchen designed for connection.
In this coastal family home, the island allows seating to both sides, creating a more social and immersive way of living where conversation, cooking and everyday family life naturally overlap.
Warm oak joinery, layered stone and forged metal details bring softness, texture and depth to the architecture, grounding the space in materiality and quiet luxury.

The exact pistachio shade, the precise bevel angle, the marble slab selected. It’s always in the detail.
A custom bar designed for a coastal Sydney residence, where the architectural form remained largely fixed and the interior became the means of transformation.
Oak, marble and glass brought together through a material-led approach. The oak hand-tinted to a soft pistachio to draw out the veining of the stone, with forged brass handles introducing warmth and contrast.
Bespoke joinery as atmosphere, and as an expression of intelligent interior design, where non-structural layers soften a space, shift its mood, and create a more immersive connection between architecture, interior and landscape. #penmanbrown

Set within an Estate on acreage just outside of Sydney, ‘The Surgeon’s Study’ is grounded, tonal and deeply saturated, an exploration of interior architecture shaped by colour and landscape rather than outlook.
A red oxide palette is carried across joinery, wall planes and shelving to create a continuous spatial language, immersive, controlled and quietly resolved. The weight and stillness of the bush setting is reflected in every surface.
Materiality leads. Natural textures, matte finishes, burnished brass and softened timber grain bring depth and tactility, balancing intensity with restraint. Custom joinery and precise detailing speak to craftsmanship, considered, architectural and enduring.
A refined expression of modern Australian design, where acreage living meets quiet luxury, detail is distilled, and every surface conveys a beauty felt.

There’s a quiet power in a home that breathes from front to back.
At Bank Street, the interiors were reimagined in collaboration with our in-house architect to open the home into a continuous, unfolding experience, creating wide throughfares, uninterrupted sightlines, and drawing natural light deep into the plan to strengthen the connection between everyday living and the landscape beyond.
A media room and library were conceived as dedicated yet open zones for study, reading, gaming and working together, connected to the rhythm of daily life while still allowing space to retreat.
The result is a home that feels expansive, intuitive and deeply lived in. One that carries you through, rather than holding you still.

A Penman Brown bedroom strikes a certain tension: restful, yet invigorating. Sparking curiosity. Grounding. Nurturing. With an adventurous undercurrent and a whispered romance.

Opportunities to be together was the brief.
And so, we avoided the single line of bar stools all facing one direction where conversation is reduced to commentary.
We approach kitchen islands differently.
This island allows seating to both sides, people face each other not the standing cook. It shifts the dynamic entirely toward socialising and participation. Yet the design still carries all the function and storage the space requires.
The kitchen is no longer a stage with one person at the helm instead a place to gather, to pause, to connect.

How we approach Acerage projects:
An interior composed as a quiet counterpoint to the landscape.
Beyond the glass: pond, orchard, sky. Within: a softened world of layered texture and light.
The brief was restraint. No competition with the view only an atmosphere that holds you there.
Gentle, deep, enveloping. A palette of warm neutrals, natural materials, and tactile finishes that absorb the light and slow the moment. Sculptural.
It’s an invitation to linger. To wake slowly. To remain in that dreamlike state that Winden Estate so effortlessly offers.
Quiet luxury, grounded in materiality. Beauty, felt.

Materiality. Proportion. Colour. Detail. The four words I return to always. Each with its own expression. It’s the syntax between them, the way they are voiced in unison, that begins a conversation that moves beyond small talk toward substance and meaning. The conversations we relish.
Over more than a decade, we’ve developed a design language at Penman Brown. One that strives for clarity, intellect…and poetry. Articulate and measured, every contribution considered, every pause intentional.
We listen closely to you, tuning in to your tone and timber.
Our own dialect is that of international design, its subtle shifts in materiality, form and mood. We act as your translator and editor, describing nuance, and shaping relevance.
The love letter we write circumnavigates trend to distil intent, and convey an expression of you and your living spaces, with purity and longevity.
This is the edge we bring to every project. This is our definition of forever.

Room with a View - Just like the famous novel by E. M. Forster, A Room with a View, this bedroom at Winden Estate was inspired by the same enduring ideas — romance, awakening, and the quiet exhilaration of the unfamiliar.
Through French doors, the garden reveals itself slowly: a trellised landscape, softened by time, light and patience. There’s something unmistakably European in the way inside and out converse here — the sense that beauty is meant to be lived with, not simply admired.
In Forster’s world, a view symbolises freedom and emotional clarity. Here, it becomes a daily ritual. Morning light, open doors, air moving gently through linen and timber. A room that invites contemplation, longing, and the subtle courage to dream beyond its walls.

The magic of the smoked mirror - designed to appear as double framed in brushed aluminium and aged brass. It doubles the width of this elongated living space at The Carlisle, Tamarama, while reflecting the garden terrace beyond and drawing the north light in to drench this south facing stacked residence.
