This week!
Join us for an author event with Clemson University alumnus, Will Cathcart, this Saturday, May 16th at 6 pm.
Will Cathcart is an American writer, journalist, and war correspondent. A Charleston native and former media advisor to the president of Georgia, he has covered Russia's wars in Georgia and Ukraine, trailed ISIS fighters through the Pankisi Gorge, documented Mugabe's Zimbabwe, and chronicled the unsolved killing of a CIA station chief. His work has appeared in CNN, Foreign Policy, The Daily Beast, Air Mail, Literary Hub, Garden & Gun, USA Today, and VICE.
A former managing editor of the Georgia Journal, he has served as senior advisor to a digital diplomacy task force countering Russian propaganda and has worked with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise awareness and funding for research. In television, he has consulted and produced for Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown, National Geographic's Drugs, Inc., and ITV's On Assignment. He and his family -- along with their cat, Gocha -- split their time between Charleston and Tbilisi.
About Will's book, This is How People Die:
Set between a modern sanitarium in downtown Charleston and the shadowed edges of Europe and of the Republic of Georgia, This is How People Die follows Scoot and Hannah -- cystic fibrosis patients who have outlived their expiration dates and every expectation that comes with being alive. Here, living "the Salt Life" means nebulizing saline solution, and coughing is a form of revival. There is no cure and too many kinds of medicine.
But these are not people who die quietly.
When Hannah leaves behind a final dare as her will and testament, Scoot follows her far beyond the tyranny of the waiting room -- from a Paris museum haunted by George Sand and the Romantics, to a Polish cathedral where he steals the preserved heart of FrĂŠdĂŠric Chopin, and onward to the liminal edge of Tbilisi, Georgia, where agents from the CIA, GRU, Interpol, and Hannah's past converge on his trail.

As your summer schedule kicks in, come by to browse books and view the works of many regional artists, including David Connell.Â
A musician and painter from Raleigh, NC, David Connell acquired a double major in history and studio art at UNC at Chapel Hill. Shortly after graduating, David started playing bass full time with The Connells, extensively touring throughout the 1980s-1990s.Â
"When I was a full-time musician I had a chance to do extensive travel, see a lot of different landscapes, and visit museums around the country. When I was not on tour I had time at home to work on paintings."
Each of David's paintings is unique.
"I think of my paintings as individual works not related to a larger theme."
David's work tends to be place-based with a personal lens.
"I am mostly interested in depicting places that are unnoticed, forgotten or derelict, maybe places that nature is trying to reclaim. I try to portray or capture places that I have found, but my personal vision is going to influence how the paintings turn out." A few of David's favorite artists are Giorgio Morandi, Francis Speight and Fairfield Porter.
You can view David's work in the Rafter Room at The Pendleton Bookshop, in collaboration with Carson Gould. Hours: Wed-Sat, 10-5.
"Sunlit House," an oil painting by David Connell, is pictured.

This #throwbackthursday photo from December 2022 is a great way to share some small business (and life) wisdom that I received from the Little Bookseller last night.
I was talking about work, and we asked her how she handles it when she has challenging work. Her reply -- I don't talk about it so much. She immediately followed up, with conviction -- I get on to it!
Good feedback, Little Bookseller. We all have many lessons to learn from you (including the importance of good snacks)!
