Take your kids to work✨
In a world where both my young kids have long been exposed to being scrutinized (giving and receiving) for physical appearances, I was so pleased for them to witness PEIFW.
My kids are 8 and 10. And if you think at this age kids haven’t witnessed discrimination for physical appearance, you’re wrong. No questions. And mine are white. Top of the pecking order. Most white parents cannot fathom what BIPOC parents experience on this.
If you have a daughter who is 10 and don’t think she’s already sizing and comparing herself to other girls, thinking about calories, fat and how to burn them off without any comprehension, you’re wrong. She’s creating her own narrative, and false or not, she’s believing it if you don’t step in.
What I love about what they saw Friday night is that nothing could get in the way of the joy. The confidence. The conviction. Because it’s real. And because I’m privileged, and I worked my ass off to make it that way.
A bubble weekend to make sure I could see what I wish I had of growing up, and what I know will positively affect the way they move in the World. And their Dad, making way for me to do it all, picking up a tremendous amount of slack, and never questioning any of it for a second.
May the bubble expand!
And in this click just before the magic began, I was most excited for them to be in the crowd to witness a feeling that was bigger than any noise.

Fashion has always been an important medium of expression for me! I was teased for my ‘weird’ clothing choices for it all through school (a notable low point being called Garbage Bags for wearing patent leather pants), but clearly time has helped me shake off the negative vibes; I’m always going to be That Weirdo if it means I get to play and creative and do art, thank you very much.
