pehrspace presents an album release concert for Ian Wellman, with additional performances by Underwater Garden Ensemble Jen Boyd and film loops by Kate Lain.
Kate Lain is a Pasadena-based artist working primarily in experimental documentary film and video. In much of her moving image work, Lain creates portraits of everyday spaces, phenomena, and people, using abstraction as a way to invite critical engagement. Her practice is rooted in observation and documentation, particularly of so-called “natural” landscapes in the Los Angeles area. She is interested in the capacities and limitations of documentation and in problematizing notions of objectivity. She sees many of her films as abstracted documents that point beyond that which they document while also calling attention to their own construction. Her work is process-driven, and she approaches much of her work as collaborations with places, with material properties, with objects, with natural and chemical processes, with weather and other conditions, and with elements of chance that arise from all of these. Lain’s film work has screened at festivals and venues internationally
smoke and ash loops is a changing arrangement of a set of looped short film strips that are physical records of the Bobcat Fire of September 2020 that burned over 100,000 acres in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. Kate Lain created the film strips in Pasadena between September 8 & 14. Lain created these cameraless images using clear 16mm film leader, cyanotype chemicals, and glue. The cyanotype strips were made with the smoke that filled the air, ash that fell at Lain’s apartment, whatever sunlight made it through the thick smoke, and tap water. The non-photographic strips were made by placing glue-covered film strips outside in smoky conditions to catch falling ash and other material falling from the air.

TOMORROW Night!
pehrspace presents an album release concert for Ian Wellman, with additional performances by Underwater Garden Ensemble Jen Boyd and film loops by Kate Lain.
Jen Boyd is a sound artist and teacher living in Vallejo, CA. She spends time recording sounds in her environment and then arranges them into layered soundscapes. In these pieces, some sounds unfold naturally while others are processed. Jen uses a variety of different microphones to explore the textures and timbres in her environment.
Many of her soundscapes seek to give depth to these delicate sounds. Although her work mostly relies on ‘natural’ sounds she uses a wide variety of sound sources to paint sonic pictures for the listener. Jen founded re:sound in 2015, a sound series on Mare Island focusing on forgotten space, environment and sound. In future projects, Jen will continue to explore the depths of natural sound and their presentation
as art through live performance and sound installations. She hopes to spark the interest in people of all ages to listen more closely to the environment they live in everyday.

Join us on Sunday! pehrspace presents an album release concert for Ian Wellman, with additional performances by Underwater Garden Ensemble and Jen Boyd.
Ian Wellman is a sound artist and composer based in Pasadena, CA. His work uses field sound and tape-loop compositions to create introspective narratives that emphasize vibrational overlaps between natural and built environments. Wellman’s recordings have been published by Room40, Elevator Bath, Ash International, Dragon’s Eye Recordings, Luminous Drift, and Industrial Coast. “Particularly Dangerous Situation” is a meditative, at times harrowing, interpretive document of the catastrophic California wildfires of 2025.

THIS FRIDAY!
pehrspace and ZUM present Chorus Pedal, featuring additional sets by Phobophylptix, Shoe Shopping, and DJ George Chen.
SHOE SHOPPING is an art-inflected rock team last seen offgassing in Los Angeles, CA. Their songs are designed and encased into digestible doses for fans of disjointed epiphanies. Tiffany Lin’s gymnastic vocal screeds intertwine with Gabe Slavitt’s frenetic guitar knots, while the growling, angular lurch of Mikie Poland’s bass apprehensively assimilates to the restless itch of Geoff Thais’ drums. Experimental in process, un-experimental in execution, Shoe Shopping’s songs are thoughtful exercises in punk urgency.
