Llechi. Slate. Dros y cyfnod clo, mi fuon ni wrthi'n sgwennu'r Canllaw Dylunio Cymunedol ar gyfer yr enwebiad STyB UNESCO Llechi Cymru hefo @melprysor o @partneriaethogwen a Dr. David Gwyn hefo @cadwcymruwales @cyngorgwyneddcouncil @llechicymru a @parc_eryri Beth sy'n gneud ardaloedd llechi Cymru mor hynod? Sut mae trwshio, a newid adeiladau? Pam bod hyn yn bwysig? Mae'n job crynhoi holl fanylion ein adeiladau cymunedol, ond mi fuodd y cyfnod ymchwil yn hyfryd. Mae pob teras yn cynnig rhywbeth bach unigryw, a hanes pob pentref, o #Bethesda #Deiniolen #Clwtybont #Nantlle #BlaenauFfestiniog #Cilgwyn i #Abergynolwyn a mwy, yn hollol wahanol. O'i herwydd, y manylion bach sy'n bwysig, ac sy'n gneud ein ardaloedd ni mor arbennig. Mae'r Canllaw yn barod o'r diwedd ac mi fydd yn cael ei rannu yn fuan gyda cyfres o weithdai pori syniadau o fewn ein cymunedau ar gyfer adeiladwyr, penseiri a pherchnogion. Mwy o syniadau ac ymchwil ar y ffordd ... ~ Over the lockdown, we wrote a Community Design Guide for the Wales Slate UNESCO WHS nomination with @partneriaethogwen and Dr David Gwyn, @cadwcymruwales @cyngorgwyneddcouncil @llechicymru and @parc_eryri What makes these areas special? How do we conserve, or change buildings? Why is this issue important? It's difficult to generalise on the details of our community buildings but it has been an intense and wonderful period of research. Each terrace is unique, each village impacted by the industry and influenced with settlement, is different. As such, the small details are important to protect, and influence what make our areas so special. The Guide is now ready, at last, and we will be sharing it soon in a series of workshops to discuss with builders, architects and homeowners. More research and ideas to follow soon ... #worldheritagesite #unesco #cadw #llechicymru #walesslate #llechi #slate #crawia #vernaculararchitecture #welshvernacular #conservation #repair #retrofit #pegwarchitects #welsharchitects #terracedhousing #beautyisinthedetail

Ailddefnydd credigol o adeiladau. Da ni i gyd yn poeni am yr argyfwng hinsawdd. A 'da ni i gyd yn deall, oherwydd yr egni sydd wedi’i ymgorffori o fewn adeiladau presennol, mae'n gneud synnwyr i gynnal, cadw ac ailddefnyddio’r adeiladau sydd gennym. Dyma’r achos amgylcheddol a thechnegol dros newid sut mae adeiladau presennol yn ein gwasanaethu. Ond, mae 'na reswm arall hefyd dros ailddefnyddio’r hyn sydd gennym. Dywedodd Ruskin fod yn rhaid i adeilad wneud dau beth os am lwyddo: yn gyntaf, rhaid iddo ein cysgodi. Yn ail, rhaid iddo siarad hefo ni. Nes i rannu pizza hefo David Lea a Patrick Hannay ychydig flynyddoedd yn ôl yng Nghaernarfon. Roedd David wedi nodi tuedd gynyddol mewn ailddefnyddio adeiladau gyda myfyrwyr ar y cwrs MArch, ac roedd yn poeni i beidio â cholli ar y cyfle i farddoni wrth greu adeiladau. Mae hwn yn fater allweddol, a'r rheswm pennaf pam dw'i wrth fy modd yn tiwtora yn CAT. Mae'n bosib cynnal priodas berffaith rhwng y ddau elfen os da ni'n ymdrin â nhw gyda gofal a sylw. Yn aml, adeiladau presennol sy'n helpu i ddiffinio hunaniaeth lle, cymuned a diwylliant. Dwi'n gweithio gydag adeiladau a safleoedd arwyddocaol, ond yn rhoi'r un gofal i'r adeiladau di-nod a'r strwythurau 'underdog' ag yr ydw i i'r Henebion Cofrestredig a safleoedd Unesco. Mae adeiladau a safleoedd i gyd yn siarad hefo ni mewn rhyw ffordd, ac mi fedrwn ni ddwad â'r un credigrwydd i unrhyw brosiect os da ni'n cymeryd yr amser i wrando ar y lleisiau tawel a chymeryd gofal i warchod rheini hefyd. Existing buildings and their creative re-use. We all care about the escalating climate crisis. We all understand that because of the high embodied energy in existing buildings, it makes sense to maintain, conserve and reuse the buildings we already have. Energy intensive methods like demolition, and rebuilding as new from scratch, need to be challenged as the 'only option' to proceed. This is the environmental and technical case for changing how existing buildings serve us. But, there is also another case for re-using what we have. Ruskin said that every good building must do two things: firstly, it must shelter us. Secondly, it must talk to us. It should narrate its own story and poetry, and reflect on its spirit of place. The artist Rachel Whiteread had the same idea when she was casting the 'House' in the 1990's. I shared a mushroom pizza with David Lea and Patrick Hannay a few years ago in Caernarfon. David had noted an increasing trend in the reuse of existing buildings with students on the MArch course, and was worried not to lose site of the poetry of creating architecture. This is a key issue, and the sole reason why I love tutoring at CAT so much. There can be a perfect marriage between both, providing it is handled with a care to create something special, and an attention to detail. Existing buildings are quite often what helps define the identity of a place, a community, and culture. I work with highly significant buildings and sites, but often focusing on the more profound details, and apply equal focus to the mongrel buildings and underdog structures as I do to the Scheduled Monuments and Unesco sites. Buildings and sites all talk to us, and we can bring the same poetry to the table if we avoid a taxidermical approach to assessing existing buildings, and we take care to listen to the quiet voices too. “Mae’r ddaear yn crynu, a does dim trywydd allan ond trwyddo.“ “The exhibition’s main architectural throughline is a wooden boardwalk structure which guides (or obstructs) the visitor’s ‘path’ through the installation’s three rooms. It echoes the boardwalks found on wet, boggy grounds, and Venice’s passerelle, temporary walkways installed when the city faces ‘acqua alta’ [...] The porosity between land and water informs the way language and matter flows through the spaces, offering ways of tuning into the sticky, storied matter of our sited project.” @manon_awst , @artreview_magazine Cydweithiodd yr artistiaid Manon Awst a Dylan Huw gyda’r stiwdio bensaernïol PegwA yng Nghaernarfon i ddatblygu prif ymyrriad cerfluniol Sownd, llwybr pren sy’n tywys (neu’n rhwystro) trywydd ymwelwyr trwy tair ‘stanza’ yr arddangosfa. Cafodd y llwybr ei adeiladu yn sir Gaerfyrddin, cyn gwneud ei ffordd i’r Istituto Santa Maria della Pietà, lle bydd yn cynnal cyrff ymwelwyr nes mis Tachwedd. Bydd Sownd: Manon Awst + Dylan Huw ar agor i’r cyhoedd o 9fed Mai tan 22ain Tachwedd fel rhan o’r 61eg Arddangosfa Gelf Ryngwladol – La Biennale di Venezia. Sownd: Manon Awst + Dylan Huw is open to the public from 9th May to 22nd November as part of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Prosiect yr Hen Bost Project, Bethesda. Gorffennaf / July 2025. !WANTED – BRICKS! ~ DA NI ANGEN BRICS! Do you have bricks from demolition sites? Any size or colour, within 50 miles of Bethesda. Our goal with the Hen Bost project is to reuse as much material as possible on site. Where new materials are necessary, they will be sourced sustainably, or reclaimed locally. Originally, we planned to reuse all demolished bricks but the mortars used during the 1980s build were so hard it's made the bricks on site impossible to clean without damage. Now we are looking for immediately available secondhand bricks from nearby demolition sites, or materials yards. We don’t need many. If you can help, please get in touch! We want buildings to be adaptable in the future and materials to be reuseable. Hard mortars and cementitious materials prevent this. ~~~~ DA NI ANGEN EICH BRICS! Oes gennych chi frics o safleoedd dymchwel? Unrhyw faint neu liw, o fewn 50 milltir i Bethesda. Ein bwriad hefo prosiect yr Hen Bost ydi ailddefnyddio cymaint o ddeunydd â phosib ar safle. Lle mae angen deunyddiau newydd, mi fyddant yn dod o ffynhonellau cynaliadwy, neu o ailddefnydd lleol. Yn wreiddiol, roedden ni'n bwriadu ailddefnyddio'r holl frics a ddymchwelwyd, ond mae mortar caled a ddefnyddiwyd yn ystod y gwaith adeiladu yn yr 1980au wedi eu gwneud yn amhosib i'w glanhau heb eu difrodi. Rwan da ni'n chwilio am frics ail-law o safleoedd dymchwel cyfagos, neu iardiau deunyddiau. Da ni ddim angen lot. Os gallwch chi helpu, cysylltwch hefo ni! #pegwarchitects #sustainability #reuse #cynaladwyedd #ailddefnyddio

'Failure is the compost of success'. Mae hi'n wsos breswyl fisol yng Nghanolfan y Dechnoleg Amgen, ac mae Ebrill bob amser yn teimlo fatha bod y cyfnod gaeafu drosodd pob blwyddyn pan ddaw Stafford Homes draw, a da ni'n llnau'r odyn calch eto. Wedi blino'n lân ar ôl jesd 2 ddiwrnod ... ond mae'r odyn dal wrthi a'r wythnos yn dal i barhau! ~ It's the monthly teaching week at @centreforalternativetechnology and April always feels like the wintering period is over with a big-bang every year for me when Stafford Homes rocks over and we clean up the kiln to start it up. "Failure is the compost of success". "Small is beautiful". "The greenest building already exists". "For everything to stay the same, great change needs to happen". "Science is the safety-pin in the nipple of academia". Where else could you study, and be encouraged to make mistakes without fear of criticism? Throw away the DO-lecture. Come-and-actually-do-it at CAT where the week always leaves me fuelled for another month to steer a different way forward. The school's unique on-site study methods combine hands-on practical learning with in-depth academic study. Me and @em13edwards are exhausted after just 2 days! The later down-time with colleagues being as much part of the process here as the lectures and building, our April week covered an action-packed itinerary ... Final 4th year MArch Sustainable Architecture pin ups for their Blaenau Ffestiniog projects; Introductions to lime-cycle and slaking at the kiln with Stafford Holmes with this year's @spab1877 Scholars; Lectures on the evolution of CAT with Pat Borer, and the relevance of Segal method with the MSc Green Building students; breakfast chats on David Lea, campus 'Gear-Changing', and moving slowly in a capitalist society; Retro-fit, Condition Reports and the art of learning to look and maintain with Owen Rickards Property Officer from @enllibardsey ; Conservation Plans, re-use of buildings, and defining significance and values in our Managing Change Workshop; finally moving on to 5th year Final Design Projects. #conservation#calch #lime #cynaladwyedd #sustainability #SPAB #centreforalternativetechnology #pegwarchitects

I SAFLE ~ TO SITE. Mae'r gwanwyn wedi cyrraedd, a 'da ni wrthi'n paratoi i symud mwy o'n prosiectau i safle eleni. Mi fuon ni mor brysur rhwng y gwanwyn a'r hydref flwyddyn diwethaf, prin y cawsom gyfle i rannu llwyddiant gorffen unrhyw brosiect! Dyma Flora MacRae ni yn cofnodi ar safle yn Llanbeulan wrth i ni gychwyn waith adfer eglwys fach i'r Friends of Friendless Churches dros 2023. Braf ydi deffro o aeafgwsg eto, meddwl am dywydd gwell o'r diwedd a chyfle i ddringo sgaffaldiau yn ol eleni. Da ni'n lwcus iawn ac mor ddiolchgar i gael gweithio mewn lleoliadau bendigedig, ar waith mor ddifyr, hefo bobol talentog a chleiantiaid brwdfrydig. ~ Spring has arrived, and we're busy preparing to move more of our projects to site this year. We were so busy between spring and autumn last year, we hardly had a chance to share any finishing successes! This is Flora MacRae @floramacrae.fm recording on a site in Llanbeulan as we worked to restore a small church for the Friends of Friendless Churches @friendlesschurches over spring and summer 2023. It's nice to wake up from hibernation, in anticipation of better weather at last and to be able to look forward to the prospects of climbing scaffold once again this year. We are so lucky and greatful to work in many beautiful locations, on interesting work, with such talented people and wonderful clients. #pegwarchitects #Caernarfon #welsharchitects  #conservation #cadwraeth

INTRODUCING ~ CYFLWYNO ... Mae @pegwarchitects wedi tyfu, gyda Emily Edwards @em13edwards ac Jed Davis @jeddavis_ wedi ymuno hefo ni bellach. Mae sefydlu cwmni gyda'r bwriad o gadw'r tîm yn fach, i gadw rheolaeth ar ansawdd, a chanolbwyntio ar ddarparu gwasanaeth fwy creadigol ac ymchwilgar, yn golygu bod pob aelod o'r tîm yn chwarae rôl allweddol. Mae Em a Jed yn llawn brwdfrydedd a syniadau am gynaliadwyedd. Mae nhw wedi bod yn gweithio'n galed iawn ar ddatblygu prosiect yr Hen Bost ers gorffen eu hastudiaethau yn @centreforalternativetechnology ac mi fydden nhw'n helpu gyrru prosiect Ty'n Llan a St. Cybi ymlaen dros y misoedd nesaf. ~ We have grown. Emily Edwards and Jed Davis have joined us since finishing their studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology last year. Setting up practice with the intention to retain a compact team, to control quality but also to drive a creative and inquisitive approach focused on providing an edifying process for everyone involved, does mean that every team member then plays an instrumental role. The experiences and spaces that we create as architects working with landscapes and built structures are only part of any story. We also work with people, with communities, with cultures and traditions. Em and Jed bring much enthusiasm with them for sustainability and a flair for working creatively with the re-use of existing buildings. They have been working really hard on developing the Hen Bost project since joining, investing time and reflecting on the traditions of Dyffryn Ogwen's slate industry and how we can minimise waste through the production of slate today. They will also continue to help drive the Ty'n Llan and St. Cybi project forward over the next few months. #pegwarchitects #Caernarfon #welsharchitects  #centreforalternativetechnology #conservation #cadwraeth #sustainability #cynaladwyedd

GAEAFGYSGU ~ HIBERNATION Da ni wedi bod yn brysur dros y 6 mis dwytha, yn canolbwyntio. Mae'na aelodau newydd wedi ymuno, a'r swyddfa wedi symud (er dim ond lawr grishia i ofod mwy, mae hi wedi bod yn ddigon o waith rhwng pob dim!). Mae chwech adeilad wedi eu cwbwlhau ar safle, tri caniatad cynllunio wedi eu cymeradwyo, a thri project arall yn mynd i safle yn y misoedd nesaf. Da ni wedi bod yn cyd-weithio hefo penseiri talentog eraill, a'n perthynnas gyda'r Ganolfan Dechnoleg Amgen yn parhau. Mis yma, ac ar Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi, mi ddaru ffrind annwyl greu ein harwydd swyddfa cyntaf un i ni. Mi fyddwn ni'n rhannu chydig o'n hanes yn fuan .... ond am y tro, mae’r peth 'bychain' ond gwerthfawr iawn yma yn teimlo fel stori llawn mor bwysig i’w rannu gymaint ag unrhywbeth arall 💛 ~ We've been on Airplane mode for 6 months to practice as a verb (and to forget the noun). A lot's happened. We've moved, and grown in size. Six projects have beed completed on site. Three Planning consents secured, and we've another three projects going to site in the next few months. We'll continue playing Hide and Seek, but it's nice to be in a position to share a little of our progress and process, our team and client's successes, a few mistakes, our models, some worthwhile consultations and research too for feedback. Collaborations with other talented practices have kept us sociable, as has our academic mischief at the Centre for Alternative Technology. We continue to learn as much as we hope we can share. Experimenting with the sustainable delivery of our projects continues to be important. We feel so privileged to be working with clients who are pushing boundaries with projects, holding genuine community value above everything else, and who allow us freedom to test our ideas with reuse of waste and reduction in processing of materials that we all hold a responsibility for when we specify. This month on St. David's Day a friend made us our very first office sign. And this really small but loving and precious thing feels as important to share for our small new practice as we come out of the shadows, as much as other big news for now ❤️ #pegwarchitects #Caernarfon
