‘sensitivity to time and process is evident in the work of Michael Mahne Lamb. Hand-planed wood, shaped through slow, tactile labour, rests on precisely cut acrylic blocks. Fast and slow processes meet. There is a reverence here, one that highlights both the sacredness of light and the grounding stability of wood. These systems interlock seamlessly, referencing Japanese carpentry practices that rely on compression joins rather than force. The materials work in quiet harmony, each retaining its integrity while supporting the other.‘ – Israel Randell, Desire Lines, 2026

Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Michael Mahne Lamb works across photography, installation and sculpture to investigate how we physically, psychologically and perceptually experience built space. Forming his own vernacular through broad research and material development, Lamb transforms photographs into tactile forms that blur the boundary between image and object, inviting viewers to feel architecture as much as they see it.
Lamb was a 2026 Banff Artist in Residence. He holds an MFA from the University of Hartford, Connecticut (2022), and a BDes (Hons) in Photography from Massey University (2014). Recent exhibitions include Outset (Level 4, 99 Willis St, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, 2025), Through Points (Te Wai Ngutu Kākā, 2024; City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, 2024), and Prototypes (Bartley & Company, 2022). His work is held in the collections of Te Papa Tongarewa and Wellington City Council.
