Samsara Smoker
Through repeated burning, wood sheds its surface and reveals the grain beneath. A record shaped by long winters, open summers, and the quiet passing of seasons. The piece carries imperfections, individuality, a memory of place and time. Each piece is handcrafted from sustainably and locally sourced ash wood, reclaimed from fallen trees throughout Hennepin County.
When using this object, consider what has come before and how those layers continue to shape who you are. It invites awareness of the cycles that define a life, subtle or profound, ongoing and unfinished.

Burning Process for the Samsara Smoker
Fire has always had the power to destroy. But in this tradition, it is used to preserve.
Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi, is the Japanese art of charring wood. A slow and careful process, where the surface is burned until it darkens, cracks, and begins to reveal its character.
The flame does not hide the grain. It deepens it.
Each mark, each line, each texture becomes more visible. The wood carries the memory of the fire.
After burning, the surface is brushed and sealed. The result is stronger, more durable, and naturally protected from weather, insects, and time.
What remains is something quiet and enduring.
A material transformed, not by adding more, but by reducing it to its essence.
